A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
laughing at TJ dressed in a much too small outfit. D grabbed it for Mark out of the donation pile and I’m not quite sure how the heck it zipped!
reading All the Light We Cannot See (just a few pages left to go!) and The Fulfillment of All Desire. I also listened to and finished The Total Money Makeover on Audible.
starting to work out again. It’s humbling to start all over, but I’m determined. I’m sore in places I forgot existed, hah! I mainly used my T25 videos and will be adding in some running next week too.
celebrating our ten year anniversary! We went to mass and then renewed our vows afterward. It was quite a bit different than the first time around – holding a whiny baby with a three-year-old clinging to our legs! – but still so special. Ten years, five kids, four moves and too many memories to count. We are so blessed.
being with family for Thanksgiving. We shared a delicious meal (with my mom’s gorgeous tablescape) with most of my family (we missed you C&A!) and it’s always nice to be together.
waking up early with my best girl to get Big White Farmhouse‘s Black Friday sale rolling. In case you’re interested, the sale is 30% off sitewide (excluding sale items) with the coupon code MERRYMERRY. We’d love to help you with your Christmas shopping!

A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
feeling…sad. Sad for Paris, of course, but sad for humanity as a whole. I’ve pretty much sworn off social media because I have a hard time with the name calling and bickering. Everyone seems to have the answer to the world’s problems and differing opinions be damned. I have thoughts of my own, but I’d much rather look you in the eyes as we hold warm mugs of coffee in our hands, you know? I want you to know my heart and where I’m coming from, before you judge my character or my devotion to my religion. I will be the first to tell you that I don’t have any answers: I’m just a sad mamma who wishes there wasn’t so much evil in the world.
celebrating M’s birthday. I have a tween. A tween! His birthday is always a little bittersweet, especially as I realized that his time here at home is half over. In a blink of an eye, he’ll be 18 and on his way out into the world. Sometimes that’s just the perspective I need to appreciate the right here and now. Slow down, time.
reading All the Light We Cannot See. I’m still so behind in my book club and I think with what’s going on in the world, I’m having a hard time reading more sad things. This book is such a heartbreaking story – so well written, but so hard for me right now.
potty training and it’s been so easy! We are firmly in the “wait until they turn three” camp because by this point, they totally get it and the transition is pain-free. We do M&Ms for every success. Sophie has been killing me with her kindness. She says, “Mama, let’s celebrate with my guys!” and passes one M&M out to everyone. Yay for only one in diapers!
celebrating Homemade Bread Day on Tuesday with white bread in the machine. Sort-of cheating, but still delicious.
thinking about this article and especially this line: “This moment, where I am pulled in too many different directions and I’m unsure of how to proceed, this is what I can turn into a thriving moment by simply learning to savor it.” Light bulb moment.
homeschool notes:
+ Morning Basket Time is working and I’m loving it too. Such a special, peaceful way to begin our day.
+ J has been dissatisfied with the amount of schoolwork he has (never enough – again!) so I’m breaking out my Kindergarten things and we’re going to see what he thinks.
+ We decided to take a break from the Hobbit and have started reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe instead. M is completing a lapbook with comprehension questions as we go. We even tried Turkish Delight! If all goes to plan, we’ll be finished by tonight, just in time to watch the movie for Family Movie Night!
{around here} Week 45/52: Week of 11.9.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
having one of those weeks. My baby is trying to give up his second nap and the result is a fussy, whiny toddler. I have been less than patient with him, as the stress of getting it all done with a baby clawing at my legs grows and grows. Having been down this road before, I know it’s only a season, but man! It doesn’t make it any easier when you’re in the thick of it. Sometimes parenting is hard.
picking up 80lb of chicken from Zaycon Fresh. The process is so easy (Mark didn’t even have to get out of his car!) and I’m so happy to not have to think about purchasing meat for a little while. Now to consider investing in half a cow…
reading All the Light We Cannot See.
ordering new rain boots from L.L.Bean. I used a gift card from my birthday (thank you A&S!) and these will be perfect for slushy snow and muddy soccer fields.
changing around rooms. We turned the playroom into a special living area for Mark and me (affectionately called “the parlor”) and we also switched up Sophie’s room for more play space. I’m so happy to have rooms that are actually being used and enjoyed.
planning for what’s next for Big White Farmhouse in 2016. I joined a week-long “Planathon” group on Facebook and it has me feeling really inspired and excited. I’ve been listing new products, rearranging the shelves in my office and starting to piece together my goals for the new year.
figuring out a way to meal plan consistently and I think I’ve figured it out! I’ve stopped stressing about paleo-this or gluten-free that. I’m going back to the basics of food as nourishment for our bodies. Less obsession with what goes in and more focus on moving: dance parties during dinner cleanup, walking around the neighborhood on chilly afternoons, being silly monsters around the house. This was the menu this week:

A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
feeling so.wiped.out. We have had a killer fall, full of good things – soccer and playdates and church functions and homeschooling routines and even a crazy decision to blog for an entire month, hah! I think I managed to make it to Halloween, turned the page to November 1st and then collapsed. This week has been less than productive, but I think I needed the rest.
enjoying our new morning routine for school. It eases us into the school day and just seems more gentle than rushing to start workbooks. This week, I introduced the boys to Frog and Toad…big hit!
confused by this crazy weather. After being in sweaters and boots for a week, we’re back to temperatures in the high 70’s! Mark, a few of the kids and I are starting to get sore throats and stuffy noses.
reading (ever so slowly) All the Light We Cannot See. I’m so behind on our book club schedule! Hoping to catch up this weekend.
researching ways to make my life a bit more organized and streamlined. I’ve entered the inspiring (and a little bit overwhelming) world of planners and wow, there is so much out there! Special stickers, “Plan with Me” Youtube videos, a multitude of pens and washi tape…it’s crazy. I’m working through all of the ideas and figuring out what will really work for me.
thinking a lot about this blog and where I hope to go in the new year. It never fails – whenever I step away from technology for a bit, inspiration strikes and I can’t wait to start again.
{around here} Week 43/52: Week of 10.26.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
watching the big kids play chess all day, everyday. They are obsessed.
preparing for our family pictures this weekend. My friend Lucy is taking them for us and I’ve been scrambling trying to find coordinating clothes for all of us to wear. Can’t wait to finally have a picture of all seven of us together!
reading All the Light We Cannot See.
changing up our Halloween costume choices last minute. We originally went the DIY ninja route, which ended up looking a little too similar to a certain terror group, so we scrapped those plans and started over. The boys are now going as Zorro, Deathstroke, and Wolverine. Mark surprised Sophia with a Cinderella dress (her very first!) and I wish I had taken a picture of the look on her face. It was as if her Daddy had purchased for her the most expensive, exquisite ballgown she’d ever seen.
“picking” (quite anticlimactically) pumpkins from a bin at Target. Our schedule has been so crazy, we never made it to the farm and with time not on our side, we opted for convenience. We were at Target to look for pieces for their costumes, so why not hit two birds with one stone? The kids didn’t seem to mind a bit and I loved the price – if you wait last minute, you get a nice-sized one for three bucks!
finding a stuffed monkey all around the house. We recently watched Night at the Museum for movie night and Dexter the monkey was a huge hit. Now we’ve got him at home too!
loving the joy on TJ’s face when he sees his sister. Sophia always greets him with a hug and says he is her best friend. I can’t wait to watch their relationship grow.
homeschool notes:
+ I’m changing things up again in an attempt to make our mornings more peaceful. We started “Morning Basket” time on Wednesday and so far, so good.
+ In history, we learned about the monks who wrote beautiful, ornate books by hand. We watched a youtube video and then tried our hand at detailed illustrations too.
{around here} Week 42/52: Week of 10.19.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
refusing to turn on the heat yet. We had a few cold mornings (like waking up to a 59 degree house) but that’s what sweatshirts and blankets are for, right?
getting used to the idea of having a car payment again. After his accident this summer (and the shoddy work done to fix it), Mark’s car has been making some weird sounds, to the point where random people are commenting in concern. I was hoping to have more time to save a significant down payment, but since he commutes so much, we thought it best to replace cars now instead of waiting and having him stranded on the interstate. That debt though…grrr.
enjoying the memories Mark and the boys are creating. All of a sudden, the kids have been all about the idea of Zorro. I find random Z’s on their schoolwork, there are frequent sword fights and I’ve even gotten requests to sew black masks. Mark surprised them and let them watch the old black and white version, his favorite as a kid, and they loved every minute.
reading Second Street Station and All the Light We Cannot See.
laughing at the exchange I heard between Sophie and J:
S: Look at my pretty crown, J. I marry you.
J: I’m not having a wife because you’re just gonna boss me around.
making the time to be in the kitchen again and it feels good. I made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, raspberry cornmeal crumble bars, and our go-to banana bread. I also tried rice in the slow cooker for the first time.
trying a new app called GoodBudget and it’s like an envelope system without carrying cash. I love that Mark and I can both access the account from our phones. At a single glance, we’ll both know exactly how much money we have left in each category. I’m hoping the visual reminder will help as we start learning how to save more than we spend.
watching our baby in awe. TJ is so cute and yet such a stinker. He waves bye to “dad” every morning, looks adorable in his fleece footie pajamas, and dances (his current favorite is Queen’s “We Will Rock You”). He also likes to slam toys on the TV, head-butts instead of kisses and gets a lot of pleasure flinging his meals off of his tray. We sure love this boy…even when he’s naughty.
{around here} Week 41/52: Week of 10.12.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
writing on the blog everyday and starting to feel the fatigue. I’m at the halfway point, though, so I’m hoping to push through and finish strong! And exciting news: I was the random winner of a weekly giveaway for Write 31 Days!
taking the kids to see Mark’s office on Columbus Day. Then we took him out to lunch, which is a huge deal because we rarely go anywhere that requires us to sit down and wait for food. The kids were excited to see where Daddy goes all day and probably more excited to eat at “real” restaurant!
reading Second Street Station.
starting from scratch on a fall wardrobe. I purged about three-quarters of my closet and am slowly purchasing the pieces I need. It’s been fun to discover my own style again. I got another successful Stitch Fix box this week and added a few more things, including a sweater and leggings. Now I’m just waiting for the cool weather to stay so I can wear them!
celebrating D’s birthday. For his special meal, he asked for Burger King (third year in a row!) and an ice cream cake. He’s easy to please.
accepting help (humbly!) as my friend offered to vacuum out my car when we came for a playdate. As we pulled up her drive, she was just finishing hers and jumped at the chance to clean mine. I tried to decline, but she insisted. Honestly, it’s a task that has been on my to-do list for weeks now and I haven’t had a spare moment. Her love language is definitely serving others and I am so grateful to have received that gift – a clean car!
facing my dental fears as I went to get my fillings done twice this week. I wish I could tell my younger self, “Self! Don’t drink all of that soda and destroy your enamel! Self! When they say it’s important to floss, they really mean it!” Live and learn.
creating a Facebook page for this blog. I’m SO behind the times, but better late than never, right?
{around here} Week 40/52: Week of 10.5.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
loving how TJ has all of a sudden attached himself to blankets. He drags them behind him through the house, just like Linus! It’s ridiculously cute.
wishing the cooler fall weather would come back. It went back to the high 70’s this week and I was so bummed. I’ll take sweater weather over sweating anytime.
making homemade quicksand. Most of the kids are a little “anti-mess” and wouldn’t even put their fingers in the concoction. Sophie, on the other hand, couldn’t get enough! She played for over an hour.
finishing up The Winter of our Disconnect (this book rocked my world…a separate blog post to come!) and starting John Paul the Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father.
watching the kids play poker. Mark taught them last weekend and they are all.about.it. A peek into the future maybe?
listening to The Hobbit on Audible as the kids colored a page I found online. It was the quintessential homeschool moment and I ate it right up.
decluttering the playroom and really considering each toy’s worth. Is it used? Does it foster creativity? We worked together and got rid of A LOT. I’m anxious to keep the momentum going to other rooms in the house.
thanking the good Lord for a happy baby again. TJ spent most of last week fussy and clingy and I couldn’t figure out why. I randomly peeked into his mouth this week and discovered four molars coming in! Don’t let the Mother of Five Badge fool you – I still have no idea what I’m doing.

A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
watching the rain fall all week. All of our commitments have been cancelled, so we’ve been sticking close to home. There’s something so soothing about being home when the weather is bad outside. The only downfall to a week of dreary days? Less than awesome photographs.
loving how Sophia calls a flashlight a “sunlight”: “You seen my sunlight, mama?”
baking more bread. I smartened up and made three loaves at once this time, which lasted us two and a half days. A personal record.
reading The Winter of our Disconnect. This book is challenging me to put away the electronic distractions (I mean, how many times can you really scroll through Instagram?) and do the things I always say I’d like to do.
listening to classical music during school. I love how the kids have been picking out the different instruments as they listen.
choosing to go No Sugar again in October. I’m hoping it will help alleviate some hormonal symptoms I’ve been having. I’m also part of a Facebook group and the community there is really helpful.
excited to have scored a deep freezer for $30 at our neighbor’s garage sale! Just in time because we will soon be picking up our second Zaycon Fresh order: 80 pounds of chicken breasts! #bigfamilyproblems
planning ideas and posts for this 31 Day Writing Challenge. It’s scary and intimidating and exciting all at once. Only 29 posts to go!
{around here} Week 38/52: Week of 9.21.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
struggling with the ugliness that comes along with blogging. While I personally have never had hateful things spoken of me (that I’m aware of…and I’m not sure I want to know if people have), I’m sickened that it happens to others. People can be so cruel and my sensitive heart struggles with that. Some days I consider shutting down the whole operation here…
reading The Winter of our Disconnect. So thought-provoking.
going to the dentist! After too long away, I was so nervous…like sweaty, “how do I get out of this?” nervous. Fortunately, everyone was very nice and I made it out okay. Unfortunately, the repercussions of the diet soda habit of my 20’s has come back to haunt me – my poor enamel!
watching coverage of the Pope’s visit. The excitement and joy is palpable!
celebrating my girl. She’s all about Madeline right now, so we got her a movie, a puzzle and a peg doll for her cupcake (which she’s played with nonstop ever since). We also got her dress up skirts and while I worried that the gifts weren’t exciting or “big” enough, she was thrilled and has played with everything. A good reminder that simple really is enough.
baking bread from scratch (no bread machine, my first time!) and vanilla cupcakes.
considering checking off “Write everyday for a month” off of my 100 Little Things List in October. Is that crazy?
loving the cooler temperatures, even if we were back in the 80’s by the end of the week. I’m dying to break out my sweaters and boots.
{around here} Week 37/52: Week of 9.14.15
A collection of our ordinary days, recorded every week. At the end of the year, I’ll publish them into a keepsake to treasure.
Around here, I have been:
feeling like an old lady. I was the only one to get sick after watching the boys’ soccer games in a downpour last weekend! I’ve been keeping afloat and trying to keep up, but whew. I’m ready to feel better and get back to exercising.
reading the first chapters of The Winter of our Disconnect and there’s so much to think about already. We start discussion in our Facebook group on Monday.
cheering on Mark as he launches his new company, Catholic Combat. He is so passionate about our faith and desires to create apparel that displays Catholicism in a new way. I am so proud of him and his big dreams.
learning about bats during our first week of unit studies. We’ve read books, researched different species and watched many videos. Did you know that the largest species of bat is called the flying fox and has a wing span of over six feet? I’ve learned so much this week.
selling my first few items on Kidizen! So exciting to get that notification on my phone!
loving my sweet, sweet Sophia. She never, ever stops talking and so one evening while making dinner, I said in frustration, “Sophie! Can you please stop talking for five minutes?!” She replied without missing a beat: “Why, mama? You my best friend!”
in denial that my baby boy is turning a year old! The past twelve months have been an absolute whirlwind, but so so good. We are so blessed to have him in our family.
