{five favorites} Vol.18: Lego Rosaries, Bullet Journals and Introverted Hospitality

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on April 1.

On to this week’s favorites:

{1}
Jack’s Bread: White Bread for the Bread Machine
I’ve been making this recipe in my bread machine at least three or four times a week.  It has a great crust and tastes delicious!

{2}
An Introvert’s Guide to Having People Over
“Plus, I’m a major introvert. I’m not shy, I don’t hate people (usually) I just would rather be alone and people, any kind, drain my energy. So an hour before I have any type of people activity, I start hating myself for saying yes and wishing a disaster would happen so I would have a good excuse not to have to go.”
I could so relate to this!

{3}

Surrender Essential Oil
You can read the whole story in my Essential Oils journal, but the short version?  This stuff is amazing.  I tend to be really skeptical when reading testimonials, but after many successful uses on my son, I’m convinced and so thankful.

{4}
Bobbi’s Bullet Journal Spring Update
“…I’ve accepted that I have my weaknesses but I also have my talents too. I still drool over some of the artwork and hand lettering I see on IG but I don’t despair. Instead, I get inspired. I do what I know, practice what I don’t and keep moving forward. So if looking at all the pretty depresses you, stop looking.”
She inspired me so much that I just started my own bullet journal!

{5}

Lego Rosary from Momento Moose

The kids each got one of these rosaries in their Easter basket last year.  We love them!  They are perfect for little ones who struggle to sit still and for wiggly boys too.  We couldn’t get through our nightly decade without them!

{five favorites} Vol.17: A Blast from the #5Faves Past

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on April 1.

Before I took on the #5Faves linkup here at The Big White Farmhouse, I was a regular participant!  Today I’m sharing five of my favorite posts from the archives:

{1}

Our Five Favorite Games for Kids
Almost a year later, this one was fun to revisit!  It’s always fun to see what has become a life-long favorite and what the kids have outgrown.  J is still a huge fan of Spot It Jr., while Sophia enjoys making up her own set of rules for Jenga.  The bigger boys seem to have graduated to older games, like chess and regular Monopoly.

{2}
My Top Five Ways to Support Bloggers
This was one of my favorite posts to write and I come back to it frequently to make sure that I practice what I preach.

{3}
Five Easter Basket Ideas for Kids
More Easter ideas that are both practical and fun!
{4}
5 Reasons We Love Jet.com
I wrote this last summer, but the sentiment is still true: I LOVE JET.  In the months since this post, the turnaround time has gotten even faster (1-2 days on almost everything) and I still think the prices are comparable or better to what I would get at the store.  Highly recommend.

{5}
My Top Five Favorites for Cool Weather Running
I’m gearing up to begin half marathon training in a few weeks, so this post was a good refresher.  The title is a little misleading, since most of these items work for warm weather too!

{five favorites} Vol.16: Five Easter Basket Ideas for Kids

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on April 1.

Easter is just around the corner, so I’ve started thinking about what to put in those five little baskets.  (Side note: I bought these baskets from World Market last year and they are so great!  Only $10 and if you use ebates, you even get 4% back.)  My motto with most gift giving is no junk.  I like to mix fun things that can be enjoyed for awhile with a few practical things they’ll need for spring.  And of course a bit of chocolate too!  Today I’m sharing five of my favorite ideas for Easter 2016:

Animal Doodles // We love Usborne, don’t you?  We have a similar set of these dry-erase cards (ours is monster-themed, which looks to be retired) and they are awesome!  The perfect activity to throw in your bag for waiting rooms, the carpool line or restaurants.

Avian Friends Puzzle // Puzzles are always a big hit around here.  Lately, we’ve been buying more difficult ones that they whole family can work on.  (And if you have little ones who could quickly destroy all of your hard work, I highly recommend something like this.  Lifesaver at our house!)

Lucy Owl Plush Doll // I am such a sucker for a well-made plush!  We sell Lucy Owl at Big White Farmhouse (shameless plug!) and she is so, so sweet.

Petal Print Bunny Tee // One of the more practical items going into their baskets this year is a new shirt for spring.  I tend to buy most of their clothing through ebay, ThredUp or Kidizen, so it’s a big treat to get something new with tags, hah!

Wizard of Oz Board Book // This is going into TJ’s basket.  We already own a bunch of the BabyLit collection and each one is so cute.  I may love them more than the kids!

{five favorites} Vol.15: Five New Workout Videos

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on April 1.

First, let’s congratulate Jen for winning February’s #5Faves Prize Pack!

The winning post: Books on Marriage (5Faves)

On to this week’s favorites:

I’ve been in a bit of a fitness slump the past few months.  But like I mentioned before, I realized that in order to regain that excitement for working out, I just needed to change things up a bit!  DUH.  So I went on a big search for new workouts and the Internet didn’t disappoint!  Here are five of my latest finds:

1 // Cardio Kickboxing with Chris Freytag
This one is my favorite, hands down.  It’s 40 minutes, which can be a tricky amount of time for TJ (his patience threshold seems to top out at around 30), so I usually keep this workout for times when Mark is home.  It’s fun, empowering and the time goes by quickly.  Love it.

2 // 10 Minute Tabata for Moms
Have you ever tried a Tabata workout?  At just ten minutes, I stupidly thought this would be an easy day – NOT the case!  This video is 20 exercises, done for 20 seconds each with a 10 second “break” in between.  That “break” is more like catch your breath for 5 seconds before moving on!  It’s challenging, but doable and boom!  Done in 10 minutes.

3 // Burn to the Beat with Keaira LaShae
So if you know me in real life, you’re already laughing.  Let’s just say, Mama doesn’t have a lot of rhythm!  But for the sake of really (literally?) shaking things up, I tried out a couple of the Burn to the Beat workouts: Hip Hop and Reggaeton Dance.  I closed the blinds to spare the neighbors, but they were actually really fun, even if I could barely keep up!

4 // Fitness Blender
Fitness Blender is an awesome site and they have videos for everything.  I tried the Fat Burning Tank Top Arms workout, which combined cardio intervals with upper body weight training.  Straight forward and well done, I really enjoyed it.

5 // Dollar Workout Club
I follow Natalie Hodson on Facebook and love her honest approach to your post-baby body.  She is also a part of the Dollar Workout Club, have you heard of it?  After watching one of their videos on their Facebook page, I loved it so much that I joined on Sunday!  The price is only $1 a week and you receive five workouts, five recipes and five small motivational videos.  Such a great deal!  I love that they show beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and that the workouts are quick but effective.  I worked my chest and back yesterday with their 17 minute video and I am more sore today than I have been in ages!  Can’t wait to regularly add their videos to the mix.

Since today is the last Five Favorites linkup of the month, I’m sharing the five items in February’s Prize Pack!  A few notes for any newcomers:  I wanted to start the Prize Pack incentive as a way to thank you for visiting here and linking up your posts.  It’s my small way of showing you that your words are being heard!  I read every single entry and try to comment on or share a few (I wish I could do this for every one – not enough hours in the day!)

The giveaway items I’ve chosen are a mix of some of my favorite things: etsy finds, vintage pieces and little bits picked up from various stores.  All have been purchased by me and nothing has been sponsored.  Here’s what I have for one lucky winner in February:

{five favorites} Vol.13: Snow Pants, Multiplication Practice & Customer Service

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on March 1.

On to this week’s favorites:

{1}

LL Bean Kids’ Cold Buster Snow Pants
After being totally unprepared for the blizzard a few weeks ago (my poor kids!), we decided to finally invest in some real snow gear.  We purchased these pants (along with these boots, which we love too!) and the boys took them out for a test drive after Monday’s snowfall.  Two thumbs up and while pricey, they are well-made and will be able to be passed down from kid to kid to kid.

{2}
Customer Service Shalom
“For 40 days, I paid attention to the people in the service industry, letting Mother Teresa’s words, ‘We belong to each other’, mean more to me than a pretty phrase to hang on my kitchen wall. For the 40 days of Lent, I treated every person in customer service as if they belonged to me, and soon, they did.”

{3}
Times Tables Activity Book from Usborne
Third grade is all about those multiplication tables and M is currently right in the thick of it.  He’s struggling a bit, so I put his math on hold and decided to add fresh ways to practice those facts.  We just started this activity book from Usborne and it is awesome!  Colorful pages and fun activities that use the facts in different ways.  There are even “Quick Quizzes”, which hopefully will help with speed and recall.
(Jessica is my go-to Usborne Consultant – I’m sure she’d love the support if you’re purchasing for Easter baskets!)

{4}
How to talk to your daughter about her body
“Maybe you and your daughter both have thick thighs or wide ribcages. It’s easy to hate these non-size zero body parts. Don’t. Tell your daughter that with her legs she can run a marathon if she wants to, and her ribcage is nothing but a carrying case for strong lungs. She can scream and she can sing and she can lift up the world, if she wants.”
I would add that it’s okay to tell her she’s beautiful too. 🙂

{5}

Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner/Detangler
Sophia has curly hair that easily gets knotted and tangled.  Lately, she’s had a low tolerance for hair brushing (so much whining and dramatic tears!) and I was desperate for a solution!  After a little late night Googling, I came across a random forum and someone recommended this leave-in conditioner.  We use it, along with a regular detangler spray, after her shower and the difference is amazing.  We are both happy girls, hah!

{five favorites} Vol.12: Five Recent Blog Posts that are Inspiring Me

Welcome to the Five Favorites linkup!
A reminder about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year: At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on March 1.

Today I’m sharing five recent blog posts that have been inspiring me this week!

1 // Tabitha’s 1000 Hours Outside Goal (as part of her 100 Small Things list)
I especially love what she wrote last week: “This week was a turning point for me in looking at my outdoor hours. For the past month it felt like a chore and something that needed checked off the list. But this week, it was ha,tingly obvious that making outdoor time a daily occurrence is such a relief to my soul. When things start to unravel with my patience and the kids are especially wacky, a trip outside to stomp about in mud puddles or a walk to the mailbox does incredible wonders for all of us.”

2 // Nicole’s Makers Gonna Make: My Master List for 2016
“I should also mention that I don’t have a goal to create 25 new things this year or anything like that.  This is all for fun and learning and peaking my curiosity.  Nothing more.”

3 // The comments from Janssen’s Tell Me What to Read – Winter 2016 Edition
Lots of great new books to check out!  I was furiously writing down titles, hah!

4 // Stephanie’s My Month in Photos
“I didn’t want the calendar pages from this book going unused, so I decided to mix things up a little and use it as a photo journal/thankful book!”  Love this idea.

5 // A Long Winter’s Nap: How Hibernation Helps You
“Now we act as if it’s always summer, demanding consistently high productivity at work and at home. But our bodies require cycles of activity and rest—daily, annually. When days are long, our metabolisms and energy levels amp up.  In winter, we produce hormones that make us sleepy, giving us time to restore body, mind and soul.  And there’s nothing wrong with that cycle—except that we work against it, forcing ourselves to operate at summer levels even in winter. No wonder so many people feel depressed at this time of year!”

First, let’s congratulate Lisa for winning January’s #5Faves Prize Pack!
The winning post: Christmas Gift Favorites

On to this week’s favorites:

{1}
Protect Your Child’s ‘PDF’: Playtime, Downtime, and Family Time
“There are things to be learned from playtime, downtime and family time that can’t be learned in the classroom, onstage, on the field or at the rink.  Our children are learning to bump up against one another and find a way to get along and to find the things that interest them enough to pull them in when time isn’t an issue.  They’re letting their thoughts sort themselves out, or finding support and comfort in family rituals.  Maybe they’ll even learn that eventually, every one feels like they’ve watched enough television for one day.  Mostly, they’re learning to be whoever they are when no one is watching.”

{2}

Munchkin Light My Way Nightlight
I originally bought this for that newborn time when you’re up nursing at night.  The light is bright enough to see what you’re doing, but soft enough not to keep you (or anyone else) awake.  The kids now use it as a nightlight.
{3}
After baby dies at 22 weeks, Connecticut dad promises to run 22 marathons
“The pain that I experienced in the marathon – that’s temporary pain,” he said.  “Losing a baby is going to be pain endured forever but we have to find ways to cope and this is my way.”

{4}

The Usborne Book of Drawing, Doodling and Coloring
 We love this book!  The pages are well drawn and interesting.  I like to take these types of books to soccer practice or any place where the little ones need to be entertained.

{5}
The Norwegian Secret to Enjoying a Long Winter
“It turns out that in northern Norway, ‘people view winter as something to be enjoyed, not something to be endured,’ says Leibowitz, and that makes all the difference.”

{five favorites} Vol.09: Five (kind-of crazy) Ways I’m Trying to Get in 10,000 Steps

I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on February 1.
Like almost everyone, I’ve been trying to get back to healthy habits this month.  And like most everyone, I’ve been struggling.  It’s cold outside and all I want to do is stay on the couch with copious amounts of coffee and books!  I’ve decided that for long-term success, I need to start with the basics: less sugar, more water and movement.  I’ve been working back up to 10,000 steps a day and since we don’t leave the house much, I’ve been coming up with some crazy ways to get it in.  Here are five things that are working for me right now:

1 // Dance Parties.  The kids always want to be in the kitchen with me.  On a typical evening, you’ll find at least two chairs pulled up the counter, with curious little people asking questions and touching ingredients.  To avoid all the “help”, I’ve started playing music while I make dinner and encouraging them to show me their moves instead.  It gets everyone moving (me included!) and also lets me cook in peace!

2 // Be Inefficient.  As someone who prides herself in efficiency, this one took a little practice.  Instead of carrying huge armfuls of clothes to put away, I take one small pile at a time.  As I unload the dishwasher, I put dishes away one by one instead of grouping like items.  It’s seems ridiculous, but it doesn’t take that much more time.

3 // Pace & Pray.  I’ve been trying to devote more time to prayer, but my brain always seems to be going nonstop and I’m easily distracted.  Pacing seems to be beneficial in two ways: I’m getting more steps and the movement seems to help me concentrate.  Who knew?

4 // 5 Minute Power Pickup.  About three times a day, I rally the kids and we set the timer for a 5 Minute Power Pickup.  We run around the house, picking up toys and putting things back in place.  It’s a great way to get your heart pumping and have a semi-picked up house in the process.

5 // Use the Stairs.  I’m guilty of asking the kids or Mark to get me an item, just so I don’t have to go up or down the stairs.  Lately, I’ve been sucking it up for the sake of the steps.  Just got into bed, but need a glass of water?  Down I go.  Need more diapers for TJ?  Up the stairs I run.

On to the favorites this week:
{1}
Dancing Deer Baking Co. Apple Pie Rounds
Sophia and I took a special trip to Home Goods last weekend and both got a treat for the drive home.  This was my pick and I thought they were delicious.  Yummy with a cup of coffee too.

{2}

The Temperament God Gave You
My friend recommended this book while at her house for a playdate and even let me borrow her copy.  I’m flying through it and find it fascinating!  I’m still trying to figure out what I am: I’m definitely driven and a goal-setter like a choleric, but also reserved, dependable and conflict-avoiding like a phlegmatic.  Is that even possible?

{3}
Amazon’s 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime
You know how much I love a list!  I’ve only read 19, how about you?  Any favorites or recommendations?

{4}

Baby Blankets from Cotton & May
Do you read Laura’s blog, A Spoonful of Joy?  She just started an etsy shop, making baby blankets.  Aren’t her fabric choices awesome?  I snagged the top blanket with the boats for a friend from Mark’s men’s group who just had their first baby.  I’m sure it will be a blanket they’ll be able to use for years and years.

{five favorites} Vol.07: Swagbucks, Dress Up Skirts & Adult Coloring Books

Welcome to the first Five Favorites of 2016!
I’m so excited to tell you about a new twist I’m adding to the linkup this year.  At the end of each month, I’ll be giving away a prize pack to one #5Faves participant!  Here’s how it works: every time you link up a blog post, it counts as one entry.  So if you link up a post every week, you’d get four entries.  I’ll keep track throughout the month and then randomly pick a winner on February 1.  I’ve been starting to pick up a few things already and I can’t wait to share!

On to the favorites this week:

{1}
RD Style Poncho Pullover Sweater
(mine came from StitchFix and is similar)
Where do I even begin?  In a nut shell, this is a poncho in sweater material with sleeves (I call mine a “swancho”, hah) and it is my cold weather staple this year.  So warm!  It’s hard to tell, but the sides are open, so you do have to wear something underneath.  I like to wear it with either leggings or skinny jeans.  It’s really just a slightly more socially acceptable Snuggie, but I’m in love.

{2}
Swagbucks
I use Swagbucks as my primary search engine.  They have multiple ways to earn points, which can then be traded in for gift cards.  I’m planning to save my points, trying to earn enough Amazon cards to make a significant dent in my Christmas shopping next December.  (If you want to sign up, I’d love for you to use my referral link!)

{3}
Melissa and Doug Dress-Up Skirts
I ordered these skirts (per Rosie‘s recommendation) for Sophie’s birthday last fall and they are in heavy rotation around here.  She wears at least two daily, even to the point where she’ll change out of her pajamas at bedtime for her “sleeping skirt”.  They also wash really well; ours have seen their share of spills and accidents.  We highly recommend for little girls!

{4}

Hello wine and bagel bites…Krispie Kreme gives me life…

{5}
Need a stress reliever?  This coloring book for adults has gorgeous art throughout with a mix of Bible verses and inspirational quotes.  I love every page and I’m sure I’ll have a bunch of them washi taped to my office walls.  Now to steal the colored pencils away from my kids…
(I received this coloring book from Blogging for Books, but all opinions are my own.)
