1 // A NEW ADDITION TO MY WALLS (FINALLY!)

On Black Friday 2022, I purchased a beautiful art print from Maris Home called “Meadow.”  And for the past year, it has been tucked underneath my dining room sidebar!  In my mind, I wanted a vintage, warm wood frame…but alas, I never found the perfect one.  Last week, I decided I was being ridiculous and picked up a relatively inexpensive frame from Target.  Project done!

2 // A FUN CRAFTY PROJECT USING JUNK MAIL

I loved this tutorial showing how to create Christmas house pockets from junk mail!  So creative.  I think I’m going to try to make one with my daughter.

3 // THIS QUOTE FROM MY ADVENT DEVOTIONAL

Instead of…self-pity, there is gratitude: to be so grateful that God thought of creating me; that God thought me worth redeeming; that God actually called me to this very rare vocation.  Gratitude and self-pity are utterly incompatible.  They will not be roommates.  They will not abide at the same time in one heart. – Come, Lord Jesus: Meditations on the Art of Waiting, p.42-43

4 // A COOL LOOK AT HOW “I SPY” BOOKS ARE MADE

We love these “I Spy” books at our house (we have I Spy Christmas and Can You See What I See? Toyland Express) and this video was so interesting!

5 // A CLEANING PRODUCT I LOVE

Have you ever used Bar Keepers Friend?  I’m way late to the party, but this stuff is amazing!  We have hard water and it creates discoloration/stains in our sinks over time.  I’ve never found a product that works well enough…until now.  So great.

1 // A SKINCARE REGIMEN THAT WORKS FOR ME

My sister-in-law is super knowledgeable about all things makeup and skincare.  This summer, I was complaining to her that I have struggled to find a product that doesn’t make my skin worse and she offered to search for a solution for me.  She bought me this e.l.f. face cleanser and this superhydrate moisturizer to try and I love them!  Very gentle and easy to use.

2 // AN ADORABLE COLORING BOOK

My daughter loves coloring in those “adult coloring books” because they have more detailed, intricate designs.  For her birthday, I found her this city one and this town one and oh my goodness, are they the cutest things you’ve ever seen.  Big hits.  I think they’d make Christmas gifts (maybe paired with our favorite markers?) or stocking stuffers.

3 // A NOVENA FOR STRESSFUL TIMES

2023 has been a wild year.  Between inflation and divisiveness and wars and rumors of wars, I often feel overwhelmed with the heaviness of life.  And that’s not even counting the little sufferings of the everyday here at home!  In these times, I come back to the Surrender novena written by a friend of Padre Pio, Servant of God Don Dolindo Ruotolo.  The prayer’s refrain is so powerful: “O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything!”

4 // AN ALL-IN-ONE MULTIVITAMIN

Included in my big supplement order for winter, I also bought the Garden of Life women’s multivitamin and was so excited to see that it also included probiotics and bioflavonoids.  According to The Cortisol Connection, a good multivitamin will help alleviate any vitamin/mineral deficiencies and the bioflavonoids are helpful for reducing cortisol.  Win/win!

5 // A SWEET TREAT FOR FALL

‘Tis the season!  My kids have made our traditional pumpkin chocolate chip cookies multiple times this fall.

1 // A FUN “BOOKTUBE” CHANNEL

I recently stumbled upon a new-to-me Youtube channel called Mitzi Reads and Writes.  I love her reading taste, her love of vintage books and her sweet Southern accent.  She’s a joy to watch.

2 // A SIMPLE WAY TO BOOST MY IMMUNE SYSTEM BEFORE WINTER

My elderberries have been prolific this year and I’ve been working hard to preserve all of the fruit.  I’ve already made some elderberry syrup and have frozen the rest for future use.  According to WebMD (and plenty of homesteaders and elders too), “the berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. They could help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart, too.”  I’ll take it!  Anyway, I purchased some cool pop-out ice trays from Marshalls (these look similar) and froze the syrup into individual cubes.  Each morning, I pop an elderberry cube into my water and I’m good to go for the day.

3 // THIS QUOTE

These roses under my window make no reference to former roses or to better ones; they are for what they are; they exist with God today.
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Like my favorite priest always says, “We should focus on becoming a saint today.”  I often get distracted by the past or the future instead of doing my very best with the time God has given me today.

4 // A LITTLE TIP FOR SAVING EVEN MORE MONEY ON PRE-LOVED CLOTHES

I recently purchased a few things from ThredUp and unintentionally found a way to save even more money.  At checkout, ThredUp provides an option to bundle, which basically means that you get an entire week to shop and then they’ll ship everything to you all at once.  So here’s what I did:

  1. I browsed the website and “favorited” a bunch of items I liked.
  2. ThredUp always has some sort of sale going on (sometimes a new one daily!), so I took advantage of the best deal.  (For example, three items were 40% off with a certain coupon code.)
  3. I picked the bundle option, which delayed shipment for one week.
  4. Throughout the rest of the week, I would check in and see if some of my favorites were now on sale.  You could use the coupon code of the day and it would still be added to the overall bundle.  Another way to save is that I could purchase some non-sale items with my rewards points.  As long as it was added to the bundle, shipping was still free!

I made that sound incredibly confusing, but I promise it’s not.  With a little patience, I was able to purchase a few more pieces for my family at even better prices.  In these inflationary times, that means a lot!  (P.S. If you’ve never shopped at ThredUp before, you can use my code for 45% off plus free shipping on your first order.  I hope you love it as much as I do.)

5 // A BETTER BOOK FOR OLDER, STRUGGLING READERS

If you have a struggling reader who isn’t into those “baby readers” that most Kindergartners use, Yak Pack Comics might be a solution for you.  We are using Book 1 for my dyslexic reader and it’s just what we needed: easy enough to gain some confidence, but definitely not babyish.  He really likes the way the story is presented in comic form.

1 // PLANNING HELP FOR HOMESCHOOL

This will be my tenth homeschool year (!!) and I finally broke down and bought a planner versus making one myself.  I decided to go with A Simple Plan homeschool planner because it was pretty, was spiral bound, and had everything I needed without a lot of the extras.  (I don’t need a meal planner and chore chart in my homeschool planner, you know?)  According to the reviews, the paper quality has decreased since last year, but I’m a simple gal and still found it to be satisfactory for my needs.  So far, so good!

2 // A GREAT RECIPE TO USE UP THOSE CHERRY TOMATOES

We have been drowning in cherry tomatoes this summer!  I’ve been using this recipe almost weekly to make pizza sauce and it’s been a hit.  I need to learn how to use my pressure canner, so I can save some for this winter.

3 // THIS QUOTE

Start by making your own home a place where happiness and love abound, through your love for each member of your family and for your neighbor. Try to put in the hearts of your children a love for home. Make them long to be with their families. So much sin could be avoided if our people really love their homes. – Mother Teresa

4 // A NEW ALTERNATIVE TO GOODREADS

Have you heard of Storygraph?  It’s a reading tracker website similar to Goodreads, but not owned by Amazon.  If you like Goodreads for the community aspect, this site probably isn’t for you.  However, if you need a place to keep track of what you’re reading, you may love it as much as I do.  This nerd especially loves the statistics and graphs.

5 // OUR GO-TO BUG BITE RELIEF

After Bite has been in regular use around here this summer!  Super easy to apply and it takes most of the sting away immediately.  Just don’t scratch first – it burns!

1 // BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD HAIR ACCESSORIES

Back in December, I learned that tying your wet hair back with elastic hair ties was terrible for your hair health.  I was doing that all the time, oops!  Thankfully, my daughter generously let me borrow one of her scrunchies until I can buy more for myself.  And update: it’s hard to explain in words, but I can see new growth and can feel strength in the area where the elastics would normally rest.  Really exciting!  (P.S. The scrunchies we use are from etsy seller, Vivacie, and are such great quality!  They’d make a great Easter basket filler.)

2 // A NEW ADDITION TO THE KITCHEN

My husband is a big fan of cast iron skillets, but wanted something a little lighter.  He recently got a Matfer fry pan and loves it.  It’s made with carbon steel and had to be seasoned just like cast iron.  With proper care, it should last us a long, long time.

3 // THIS PASSAGE FROM MY LENTEN READING

We are now living in a time of faith.  The Holy Spirit writes no more gospels except in our hearts…We, if we are holy, are the paper; our sufferings and our actions are the ink.  The workings of the Holy Spirit are his pen, and with it he writes a living gospel; but it will never be read until that last day of glory when it leaves the printing press of this life.

And what a splendid book it will be – the book the Holy Spirit is still writing!  The book is on press and never a day passes when type is not set, ink applied and pages pulled.  But we remain in the light of faith.  The paper is blacker than the ink and the type is pied; the language is not of this world and we understand nothing.  We shall be able to read it only in heaven.  We could understand something of the complexity of God’s activity if we could see our fellow humans not just as they appear superficially but in their very essence and see, too, how God is working on and within them.  Yet there are difficulties.  How can we read this book when its letters are unknown, of infinite variety and upside down, and its pages smeared with ink?  Just think what an infinite number of different and worthwhile books are produced by the mixing up of twenty-six letters.  We cannot understand this wonder, so how can we comprehend what God is doing in the universe?  How can we read and understand so vast a book, one in which every single letter has its own special meaning and, within its tiny shape, contains the most profound mysteries?  We can neither see nor feel these mysteries.  Only by faith can they be known…

So teach me, Holy Spirit, to read in this book of life!  I long to become your disciple and, like a little child, to believe in what I cannot see.  It is enough for me that my master speaks.  He talks and explains, arranges the letters of the book and makes it comprehensible.  That is all I need.  (Abandonment to Divine Providence, p.45)

4 // AN ADDED-SUGAR FREE SWEET TREAT

Have you ever tried dates in the refrigerator?  I was never a big fan of them at room temperature, but after getting a tip that they tasted incredible chilled, I’ve been converted!  Super sweet and almost a taffy, caramel consistency.  Yum.

5 // A SOLUTION FOR PESKY, ALWAYS MOVING THROW RUGS

We had a throw rug near our side door which never seemed to stay in place.  The kids would accidentally kick it around, the door would catch on a curled corner…it was a first-world problem frustration, ha!  Enter: Gorilla Grip.  It’s a double-sided adhesive strip that you stick to the bottom of the rug and then the floor.  No more movement!  Supposedly, it’s removable and reusable too, but I haven’t tried yet.

1 // HAIR CARE HELPS

I’m a very low-maintenance chick but even I could tell that my hair was looking a little worse for wear.  After some research, I learned a few things: (1) poor hair health is indicative of a greater nutrition/stress issue and (2) this can be fixed!  I’ve actively worked on reducing my stress – a work in progress! – but I invested in some recommended hair products too.  I have been using this deep conditioning mask about once a month.  (I bought a trial version on Poshmark to see if it would work for me before committing to the big container.)  I also got this hydrating heat spray to use before blow-drying; apparently, this is a big deal!  The spray has a light coconut smell that reminds me of the beach.  Both products seem to be working.  (Better nutrition is helping too.)

2 // A DEPRESSION ERA STUDY WITH GRANDMA DONNA

Do you read Grandma Donna’s blog?  “For anyone just finding my blog, my husband Charles, and I live a old fashioned simple life and we enjoy studying history. We do one year studies and live like the year we are studying. We try to live the way they did as much as we can so we can learn what it was like.” (taken from this post)  In 2023, they are studying the 1930s and I am so inspired.  I am learning a lot and excited to start reading about that time period myself.

3 // MY HOMEMADE PLANNER

Last fall, I was in a huge creative rut.  In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I decided that I would create my own bullet journal style planner.  Surely this would help get those creative juices flowing again!  And praise the Lord, it has!  I am using this inexpensive notebook and splurged on these mildliner pens and this set of washi tape.  The inspiration is endless on Pinterest and I’m having so much fun recreating the ideas and layouts.  (I’ve been working on February pages this week, which should explain the photo above.)

4 // A NEW PLACE TO BUY AND SELL BOOKS

I recently found a new reselling app called Pango Books.  I love it because it helps me put my old books into the hands of readers while also supporting “the man before the company,” which is one of my goals for 2023.  I’ve been both a buyer and a seller and the process for both was super easy.

5 // STAYING WARM THIS WINTER

While this winter has been remarkably warmer than usual, we have had some pretty chilly evenings.  My kids were excited because they were able to pull out the hot water bottles!  We have some similar to this one and they love to tuck it into their beds to keep their sheets and toes warm.  An old-fashioned favorite that is loved by a new generation.

1 // THESE BLANKETS FOR KIDS

I received a weighted blanket for Christmas a few years ago and it’s a crowd favorite with the entire family.  I finally decided to invest in some for the kids (so they’d stop stealing mine!) and eventually landed on WeeSprout weighted blankets.  I like that they have choices appropriate for different ages/sizes (I got the 5lb for my youngest and 10lb for my middle kids) and the quilted look distributes the weight evenly.  And extra awesome: I think the kids sleep more deeply when they use them.  Happy, well-rested kids = a happy mama.

2 // THIS SOUP, PERFECT FOR SORE THROATS AND CHILLY NIGHTS

Back in October, I had some random bits of things in the fridge that would be perfect for a soup.  A quick search led me to this chicken noodle soup recipe and it was a big hit.  I’m keeping the recipe close by for the inevitable days when we have the sniffles or just need something warm to fill our bellies.

3 // THIS QUOTE

…it occurs to me now, however, that I might work with light itself.  It has always captivated me, the way it shifts and alters all that it touches, significant both in presence and in absence.
I am desperate to begin.  I have become too mindful of suffering and darkness; they attend to me even when I bid them not to, like scavenger birds perched and waiting for the calf to die.  And when I seek a finer grace in the day, some essence of love and life, the light fades beneath my eyes.
I will not abandon the quest before it has truly begun, however.  I will let this grief sharpen my gaze, polish and shape it until it becomes a magnifying lens through which I might yet see.
– To the Bright Edge of the World, page 218

4 // THIS POPCORN MAKER

We’ve been without a popcorn maker for quite awhile now.  Our previous one broke and every time I tried to reorder another, the shipment was ultimately cancelled.  Womp womp.  Recently, while on Poshmark for something completely unrelated, I stumbled on a brand new, never removed from the box popcorn maker!  (I know I’m a broken record at this point, but I’m loving the “secondhand” market right now.)  I’ve never used this type of popper before and I’m loving it.  Smaller footprint, no oil needed and cleanup is minimal.  So great.  I was thinking that when paired with some popcorn kernels and a movie, it would make a really sweet family gift for Christmas.  If you can’t find another one on Poshmark, Amazon sells them as well.

5 // THIS TOOL THAT TRANSFORMED MY UGLY COUCH!

Back in December 2020, still on cloud nine from becoming debt free, we finally replaced our beat-up Ikea couch with a more expensive, “grown-up” sectional.  I went with a lighter color in a less child-friendly, but allegedly “high performance fabric.”  This was it, guys – the start of a new beginning!  And very, very quickly…the fabric was covered with pilling.  Think of your oldest, most ratty sweater and multiply by 10.  I was convinced I had made a wrong fabric selection (you know how some of these places have fabrics that are completely impractical for actual living!) and was so, so embarrassed to have wasted so much money.  But whatcha gonna do?  I threw some throw pillows and blankets on it and tried to ignore all of its ugly glory.  Fast forward to two weeks ago when I randomly stumbled on an article about caring for upholstery.  Halfway through, it basically said, “Pilling on couch upholstery is completely normal and you just need a fabric shaver to make it look good as new.”  How did I not know this?!  I ordered the one they recommended, the Gleener fabric shaver, and my couch is transformed!  If you get satisfaction from vacuuming, you’ll love this thing.

1 // A FUN WAY TO TRACK YOUR HABITS

My big goal for September was to bring some margin into my life.  I have been laser focused on the expansion of our homestead and finally hit burnout stage in August.  Anyway, at the beginning of the month, I made a list of “fun” things that bring me peace/happiness.  I also found this free printable habit tracker to visually see what I’m choosing each day.  Loving the daily check-in so far!  (And you can tell from my tracker above that it’s still way too hot to have a big quilt on my lap, ha!)

2 // “TELL ME WHAT YOU REMEMBER” BOOKS

Inspired by Farmhouse Schoolhouse’s “Friday Exam” tradition, we are incorporating this in our school week too!  She mentioned in one of her blogposts that she was transitioning from butcher paper to blank notebooks and I went that direction too.  I bought these spiral-bound books and each Friday, I ask a handful of questions: “Tell me what you remember about Daniel Boone’s adventures with Finley.  Do you remember how a compass works from our geography studies?  Can you write down a Roman numeral cheat sheet?  What was your favorite part in our read aloud this week?”  We casually chitchat and the kids draw their favorites on one page of the spiral-bound book.  Sometimes they are very detailed, sometimes they choose to only make pencil sketches.  All of it combined shows me what things stuck and what I’ll need to review in the next week.

3 // A NEW-TO-US ART CURRICULUM

We are trying Art Tango for art education this year and loving it so far!  In an attempt to accommodate a range of students, I decided to go down the middle and follow the Third Grade Level.  It’s simple enough for my second grader to understand, but I can easily make it more advanced/detailed for my 6th grader.  And the curriculum is free!

4 // A MIRACLE TOILET RING CLEANER

We get these really awful hard water stains in our toilets and it’s always so embarrassing when we have people over.  I want to block the bathroom door and say, “We really are clean people, I swear!”  I have scrubbed and scrubbed using a variety of products and they barely made a dent.  Insert the Pumie toilet bowl ring remover!  It’s safe for porcelain, contains no added chemicals and can remove anything.  My toilets look brand new again!  I’ll be buying these things in bulk from now on.

5 // A PRINTABLE FOR LEGO FANS

A fun activity that my little boys have been enjoying: coloring this cute Lego minifigure printable in a variety of ways.  I love to see what they come up with.

1 // MY GO-TO FARMER FOOTWEAR

Last fall, my husband surprised me with these muck boots.  I balked at the price, but they have proven to be worth every penny.  I like that they are easy to pull on quickly and are relatively comfortable for a rubber shoe!  I have worn them in sun and snow and rain and they’ve held up beautifully.

2 // A WICKER BUTTOCKS BASKET FOR COLLECTING EGGS

If you can get past the funny name, this is the best egg basket!  I love the vintage one I found and how it looks on the kitchen counter.  Etsy has a ton of options, including this one, this one, and this one too.  So cute!

3 // OUR NEW FAVORITE BLUEBERRY PIE

For the fourth of July, I made this blueberry crumble pie and the kids still talk about it.  It was the first time I’ve ever included shredded apple in the filling, which helped keep the blueberries from spilling every which way.  And the crumble topping?  Yum.

4 // DAD’S CLASSIC MOVIE SUMMER SERIES

One fun activity my husband has started with the kids is a “Classic Movie Night” filled with some of his childhood favorites.  Some are appropriate for the entire family, some are a little more mature or intense.  A few of their favorites:

  • The Mark of Zorro
  • The Adventures of Robin Hood
  • The Magnificent Seven
  • The Sons of Katie Elder
  • The Guns of Navarone
5 // A SOLUTION FOR BETTER QUALITY SLEEP

This is turning out to be a list inspired by my husband, ha!  He recently started using this mouth tape and we’ve been amazed at the difference in his sleep quality.  Turns out that breathing through your nose is really important!

1 // A SAFER NAIL POLISH

Have you heard of Piggy Paint nail polish?  They are a small business focusing on non-toxic, water-based nail polish.  I stumbled on them while looking for Easter basket ideas for my daughter and ended up buying her this gift set.  She loved it.

2 // STICKERS!

I decided to try Sticker Giant for the first time and was so impressed.  I designed my sticker on Canva and it was a quick process to upload it to the site and order.  I appreciate that they send you a proof before printing so you can see exactly how everything will line up on the sticker.  We picked the matte finish so we could write on them and it was perfect for our needs.  Our chicken looks so professional!

3 // A REUSABLE SWIFFER PAD

With supply chain issues and the rising cost of everything, I’ve been trying to invest in more long term solutions.  And if I can purchase from a small business, it’s a win/win!  My latest find was from the shop, JuniperSeed Mercantile.  I bought a set of washable, reusable Swiffer mop pads and I love them!  Great quality.  (I also purchased their reusable bamboo hankies, but haven’t tried them yet.  They are on the smaller side, but really soft.)

4 // A SWEET TREAT FOR ALL THOSE STRAWBERRIES

It’s strawberry season!  One of our favorite treats is strawberry shortcake and I use this recipe for the biscuits.  Quick, easy and delicious.

5 // EFFECTIVE FRUIT FLY REMOVAL

Having my sourdough on the counter attracts fruit flies, which is so annoying.  Thankfully, I found a nontoxic trap-type thing called Fly Punch and it’s quickly gotten the problem under control.  I bought mine on Grove, but you can also find them on Amazon.

1 // SIMPLE MEMORY KEEPING

After a two year hiatus, I’m back to recording little snippets of our everyday life with the 1 Second Everyday app.  I love this type of memory keeping.

2 // HOMEOPATHIC ALLERGY RELIEF

Springtime has not just brought new growth and sunny days, but also our favorite friend: allergies!  In an attempt to save a little money (and avoid some side effects from conventional choices), I decided to try out a homeopathic version.  Honestly, I had low expectations but I’ve actually been highly impressed!  My worst symptom is a runny nose and one pill clears me right up.  My husband and son suffer worse than I do and even they feel like it helps.  And 60 tablets for a little over $6 can’t be beat.  I purchase from iHerb, but you can also get them on Amazon.

3 // READING THE BIBLE IN A YEAR AS A FAMILY

My husband followed the Bible in a Year podcast with Fr. Mike Schmitz in 2021 and enjoyed it so much that he requested that my oldest two sons listen for 2022.  We’ve had such great conversations dissecting what they’ve been learning!  In March, I incorporated it as part of my Lenten discipline and haven’t missed a day yet.

4 // HELP FOR HEALTHY TRANSPLANTS

I heard about this organic mycorrhizal fungi powder from a gardener on Youtube and decided to give it a try.  The claims are astounding: it is supposed to promote vigorous root growth, deceases the amount of watering needed, enables the soil to retain nutrients longer, and reduces transplant shock.  I’ve used the powder for all of my transplants (including fruit trees!) and they’ve all done great so far.

5 // GOOD ADVICE FOUND ON A NOTECARD

I recently found this little card below while decluttering.  I have no idea where it came from or how it came to be in my house, but I loved the rules and taped it up on my mirror.  With everything going on at home and out in the world, I am specifically working on #10: Live one day at a time.  Tomorrow will take care of itself, right?

1 // A FUN SPRINGTIME ACTIVITY

On one of the warmer days last week, we made a homemade bubble solution using this recipe.  I kept the 4:1:2 ratio, but went with a cup versus a tablespoon.  Big hit with the smallest three kids.

2 // HELP FOR NOVICE GARDENERS (LIKE ME!)

When it comes to gardening, I need all the help I can get.  I recently discovered the From Seed to Spoon App and it is a treasure trove of information for novices like me!  The layout is easy to navigate and I especially love how it tells you when and how to plant each variety.  The “friends” section is helpful for companion gardening as well.  I’m learning a lot and have completely revamped my garden plan.

3 // NEW IDEAS FOR GETTING EVERYONE OUTSIDE

Have you seen the 1000 Hours Outside kick off packet?  (Thanks for the tip, Tab!)  My kids are a bit older and we already spend a lot of time outside with farm/garden stuff, but I still found value in the printables.  I’m jotting down the best ideas in my planner and plan to surprise the littler kids with special days throughout the year.  Yay for helping me be a fun mom!

4 // A VIDEO THAT MADE MY KIDS LAUGH

The elementary-aged kids and I just finished up the mammal unit in science and they especially loved the section on primates.  One of the animals we learned about was the macaque and this video had them in stitches.  I mean…what a life.

5 // A MORE NATURAL SOLUTION FOR HEADACHE SUPPORT

I occasionally struggle with hormonal and stress headaches.  In an attempt to find a more natural solution, I purchased the Migraine Support roll on from Rocky Mountain Oils.  If I apply it as soon as I feel the headache coming, it really takes the edge off.  Not sure I’d say it completely takes it away, but I’m thankful for the supplementary help.
