The weather outside is //

Still going strong on Operation “See How Long We Can Go Without Turning on the Heat”!  This warmish week should help.

As I look outside my window // Most of the trees around our property are poplars and they’re always the first to lose their leaves.  We have a few evergreens and a few oak stragglers still showing off their colors, but it’s looking a little bare out there.  A different kind of beautiful.

As I look around the house // I have so much to catch up on after the excitement of last week (see below)!  Lots and lots of laundry in my future.  After an entire week off, I’m also returning to my new cleaning routine.  It’s nothing ground-breaking, but I started assigning days to rooms/zones and it’s working great!  Here’s my weekly plan:

  • Monday: Living Room/Dining Room
  • Tuesday: Kitchen
  • Wednesday: Master Bedroom
  • Thursday: Bathrooms
  • Friday: Kids Bedrooms
  • Saturday: Mudroom/Outside
  • Sunday: rest day

We already have a basic level of upkeep (general tidying, daily laundry, vacuuming when necessary, washing/putting away dishes, etc) so this is really for those things that I should do, but never seem to get around to doing.  For example, on “Master Bedroom Day” a couple of weeks ago, I pulled down all of my curtains, washed, ironed and rehung them.  I’ve also organized my pantry, decluttered half of my closet, scrubbed bathroom cabinets, etc etc.  It feels so good to chip away at all of those little tasks that often get pushed under the rug.  One other task I also assign to each day is dusting and window washing because man oh man, do those things make a difference!  (I’m also obsessed with this reusable dusting cloth and this window cleaning kit!)

Recovering // from a gnarly bout of stomach flu that made its way through the entire family.  Thankfully, the kids bounced back quickly…me, not so much.  Getting old is hard.

Thinking // about a vivid dream I had last Friday night.  I don’t remember any of the back story, just that I was sharing with someone the impact my grandmothers made in my life and how much I miss them now that they have gone.  I woke up weeping and it was such a random, bizarre occurrence.  I never remember my dreams!  I wonder what it means.

On this week’s to-do list //
– try to see the total lunar eclipse (“red moon”) on Tuesday
– vote
– plant garlic
– mop hardwood floors
– go through the kids’ shoes and remove the unneeded/outgrown ones
– order Christmas stamps
– work on stocking stuffers
– order grit pads to continue sanding the laundry room walls

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // The summer garden is almost finished for the year, although we still have quite a few tomatoes on the vine.  My fall garden has been a bust – maybe I can sow a few lettuce seeds before it gets too late.

As I look around the house // I’m gearing up for one of my least favorite motherhood tasks: the switching of kids’ clothing to the next season!  Thankfully, as the boys get older and their growth spurts happen less dramatically, I have less plastic bins to dig through than in years past.  We still have warm days ahead (see the forecast above!) but I definitely can put some of the summer things away and take out the jeans and long sleeves.

Supporting // my fellow resellers by choosing ebay/Poshmark first.  (I’m sure many of us are stressed about inflation and are trying to make a little side money to compensate!)  Anyway, I have a list of items each family member needs for the upcoming fall/winter and every day, I set aside 30 minutes to browse the secondhand sites.  I am so pumped about the deals I’ve found!  A few highlights:

  • a brand new pair of booties for my daughter (retail $20) = $12
  • a 100% wool throw blanket for the living room (preowned options range from $50-100) = $17
  • a brand new with tags Banana Republic button-down shirt for my son (retail $65) = $13
  • a brand new with tags blazer for my husband (retail $275!!) = $13

My biggest tip for extra savings is to favorite/save the items you’re interested in and then wait.  Very often, the sellers will send you an even better deal!

Reflecting // on this quote from Padre Pio: “Don’t draw back, and worse still, don’t stop going up the Calvary of life.  Jesus will extend His hand to steady you.  The thought of the sustaining grace of God and the prize that Jesus has reserved for you will be a sweet comfort.”

On this week’s to-do list //
– celebrate an 8th birthday!
– mail baptism gift
– muck out the chicken coop and get it ready for fall/winter
– cover crop the used paddocks with winter rye
– organize the medicine cabinet

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // We recently had quite a scare with Fred the pig.  All of a sudden, he became really lethargic and refused to eat.  Fred loves food so we immediately thought something must be really wrong.  A quick search online showed me all the worst case scenarios and I scared myself silly thinking he must certainly be close to death.  You should have seen me babying this 300+ pound animal, coaxing him with treats and water.  Praise the Lord, he eventually perked up and is hopefully getting back to normal.

As I look around the house // Our first week of school went really well!  I am always nervous because I never how it’s going to go – some first days go wonderfully, others have me questioning all of my life’s decisions.  So thankful that this year was a smooth transition with a group of (mostly) enthusiastic students.  Looking forward to Week Two.

On this week’s to-do list //
– finally get the new armchair repaired!
– finish up the permanent pig shelter for Ethel
– start hauling over wood chips
– order straw
– clean up the flower beds at the front of the house
– inventory my fall/winter wardrobe and jot down any needs
– order birthday gifts

Low buy month update // Week 4!

  • We spent less on groceries, but still spent the saved money on different things that popped up like a birthday gift and the admission fee to a competition.  Always something!  At this point, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels.  To make some significant progress on our financial goals, I think I’m going to need to get even thriftier (how??) or start supplementing our income with more focused side hustles.
  • We had two days of zero spending.
  • Side hustle update: I didn’t have much time for reselling/decluttering, but did find 6 items to list.  By week’s end, I had 3 sales.  We also sold some eggs to a friend.  Total money earned: $52.69

No.684: Homemaking Notes on a Monday // Vol.34

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission of any sale made at no extra cost to you.

Well, I lost my “blog every weekday in August” streak last week.  Too much going on and not enough energy to write anything coherent.  We start our school year this Wednesday, but hopefully I’ll be able to publish a few more posts before month’s end.  I think I can, I think I can…

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // We processed our last batch of meat chickens last weekend and like everything we do around here, we ran into some roadblocks.  On day one, we somehow misplaced a tiny piece of the plucker, making the machine inoperable!  As the boys and I imagined (in horror) the idea of hand plucking over 70 birds, my husband finagled a way to fix it with random things we had on hand.  The day was saved!  Thankfully, day two went much more smoothly.

As I look around the house // My house is a disaster.  Definitely need to do a thorough tidy before school starts.

Reflecting // on 2022 so far.  This year has been good.  So busy, so full.  Yet as the growing season winds down, I can feel myself craving some more margin in my life.  I think about the farm all the time and every single day – how to keep the animals healthy, how to improve production, how to streamline chores, how to expand further.  I think I need a break from carrying that daily load.  I’m already brainstorming some goals for September.

On this week’s to-do list //
– scrub out and pack away all of the chicken feeders/waterers
– install math programs onto the computer
– empty out the cabinet to be moved to the dining room (I’m moving things around again!)
– finalize week one lesson plans
– catch up on laundry
– start school!

Low buy month update // Week 3!

  • This was not a great week for saving.  We had a couple of Aldi trips and some purchases for the farm/processing.  It is also our tradition to eat out after broiler processing (we joke that we’re organic farmers, but we still like our local pizza/Chickfila!) so that filled two meals.
  • We had one day of zero spending.
  • Side hustle update: I had no time to focus on decluttering/reselling so listed 0 items.  I feel like the more I list, the more I sell (maybe it’s an algorithm thing?) so it doesn’t surprise me that I only sold two items.  Total money earned: $7.30

On the menu this week // Can I be honest and say I have no idea what we’re going to eat this week?  As we get back into the school routine, I’m going to need dinner to be simple, simple, simple.

The weather outside is //

Look at that weather forecast!  Highs in the 70s in August is pretty unheard of around here.

As I look outside my window // This is our last full week of summer break and I’m torn between being completely lazy and going 100-miles-an-hour tackling farm projects.  I’m going to attempt to balance both goals by working hard in the morning and then relaxing all afternoon.  I really need to weed the garden and finish up one of the permanent pig shelters.  We’ll see how this goes.

As I look around the house // I’ve been searching the house for things to donate/sell and I’m happy to report that I’m having a little trouble!  Decluttering regularly (and then not bringing in tons of new stuff) has really helped keep the house at a comfortable level.  We’re nowhere near minimalists, but I think we’re getting closer to the Goldilocks feeling of “just right.”

Recovering // from the shock of our latest electricity bill.  Between this month and last, we haven’t changed our routine at all, but the “rate adjustment” increased our bill by almost $100!  To add salt in the wound, we were also told that another rate adjustment (the third since May) will be implemented next month.

On this week’s to-do list //
– celebrate the Feast of the Assumption
– prep the schoolroom for the new year
– respond to blog comments (I apologize for the delay!)
– look into PO Boxes
– shred junk mail
– organize my master closet
– prepwork for Broilers 2.0 processing

Low buy month update // Week 2!

  • After successfully getting Fiona onto the trailer and off to the processer, we bought lunch from Chickfila.  Eating out is never cheap for our family, but this felt like a worthy time to celebrate.
  • We had three days of zero spending.
  • Side hustle update: I listed six items on ebay/Poshmark and made nine sales!  We also sold some chicken and eggs to a friend.  Total money earned: $98.31

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // As you are reading this, we are hopefully (!!) getting Fiona onto the trailer and off to processing!  We borrowed a farmer friend’s trailer last Wednesday and it’s been in her paddock ever since.  She’s been stubborn and even put herself on a hunger strike (we put her food in the trailer, but she refused to go in)…but I think we turned a corner on Sunday.  Praying for a smooth moving process today.

As I look around the house // The weather forecast looks like I’ll be spending a lot of time indoors, which could be dangerous!  Last week on a rainy afternoon, I had the crazy idea to bring the old loveseat in the basement up two flights of stairs to the schoolroom.  One of my sons helped me move it (we only dinged one wall!) but he definitely looked at me like, “Oh no.  Mom’s got that redecorating look in her eye again.”

A low buy month update // I’m considering Week 1 a success!

  • Most money was spent on groceries.  Our local grocery store has been having shortages and limits, so we decided that continuing to add to our pantry is probably wise.  (This week we added some peanut butter, jelly, and marinara sauce.)  I’m still hoping to keep the grocery budget low throughout this month, so we’ll see if I can accomplish both goals at the same time.
  • We had four days of zero spending.
  • I began decluttering again.  I started a box for Goodwill and listed 14 items on ebay/Poshmark.  By the end of the week, I had made three sales.  Money earned after fees: $31.30

Returning // to this post after feeling like my Year of Simple has been a terrible fail so far.  Thankfully, it’s only August…plenty of time to turn this ship around.

On this week’s to-do list //
– get a start on fall garden planting
– work on the permanent pig shelter
– make a DIY grout cleaner
– post a few toys on Trash Nothing
– troubleshoot the sanding problem with the laundry room walls
– celebrate the feast day of Saint Lawrence by having a BBQ (weather permitting)

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // The weather has been so incredibly hot and my enthusiasm for outdoor projects has dropped dramatically.  On a positive note, my garden is looking great, a little jungle-like since I’ve been slacking on the weeding, but great!

As I look around the house // My excitement for a little living room update has quickly deflated: the armchair (that arrived broken) won’t be replaced, but the company is going to send someone out to repair it.  When we called to make an appointment, the earliest they could come was the end of August.  The lumbar pillows that I bought for a steal on Poshmark….well, the seller never shipped them, so I eventually cancelled the order.  Womp womp.

On this week’s to-do list //
– start fleshing out lesson plans for the first few weeks of school
– touch up laundry room walls (& hopefully start painting!)
– try making zucchini puffs
– clear out the last of the spring garden & amend soil for fall
– finally finish stitching the scrap quilt top!

Intermittent fasting update // I’ve been reasonably strict for almost one week and I’m feeling so good.  Down 1.5 pounds, which is welcome, but the internal gut feeling (difficult to explain, but I just feel satisfied and not overly full) is the best part.

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // I am determined to figure out how to fortify the hens/ducks from a pesky predator.  Probably a racoon?  The girls are all safe in their coop, but he certainly has enjoyed opening the buckets of feed.

As I look around the house // I’ve been bit by the homemaking/home decorating bug!  After months of being on the back burner, I’ve been slowly cleaning and tidying and organizing each room.  My “Things I’d Love to Find” list is growing!  (One of the lessons from the 1,000 Item Declutter Challenge that has really stuck for me.)

Watching // all the curriculum review videos on Youtube.  For the past two years, I’ve been so distracted by life that I feel like our school has been (sadly) unexciting.  I’m ready to breathe some new life into our school days!

On this week’s to-do list //
– figure out how to eat these adorable pattypan squashes
– order materials for the winter permanent pig shelter
– fertilize the fruit trees
– continue moving wood chips to the food forest
– buy a small roller to paint the back doors
– list a handful of things on ebay/Poshmark
– work on the laundry room project

Thank you so much for your well wishes and prayers on my last post!

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // We were able to assess the damage throughout the entire property and while it’s extensive, it’s nowhere near as bad as some of our neighbors and farmer friends.  Some of our moveable Premier 1 fencing was mangled beyond repair.  There was damage to the chicken coop and my enclosed garden, but we repaired them with materials at home.  Our perimeter property fencing was crushed in a few spots.  We hired our go-to company to chop up some of the larger and more precariously hanging trees and my husband cut the rest.  (We had four completely uprooted trees, which was wild.)  The weekend was spent cleaning up the mess and there’s more to do.

As I look around the house // We were without power for about 52 hours and were beyond happy to see those lights come on again!  I have some major laundry catch-up to do…

Starting // the planning process for next school year.  I’ll have all six kids to teach, 10th grade down to K, and I’m a little in shock at how fast time flies.  My kids are so big!  Hoping to finalize the curriculum selections (using mostly things I already own) and then get myself organized for the year ahead.

On this week’s to-do list //
– move the old curriculum out and new curriculum in
– order the last materials needed for next school year
– deal with the Japanese beetle issue on the fruit trees
– make a batch of iced peach tea
– hang flag fan banners on the porch
– continue working on emergency binder
– send two pigs off to the butcher (a bittersweet day!)

On the menu this week //
I’m going to try bulk cooking in an attempt to save some time and electricity on these hot, summer days.  Maybe a bunch of chicken, hamburgers and brats on the grill?  We can then use the meat throughout the week for chicken salads, tacos, burgers, etc.  It should be easy enough to whip up some simple sides each night.  We’ll see how this goes.

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // There is so much to see!  The summer garden is coming along and wildflowers are popping up all over.  Man, I love this time of year.

As I look around the house // It’s Week 3 of my frugal summer challenge and I think I’m going to focus my efforts in the kitchen.  Homemade bread, tortillas, and freezer waffles are all on the docket, as well as preserving some of the harvest from the spring garden.  I just bought a pressure canner and I’m intimidated but also excited to try it out.

Starting // another new summer project: a “just in case” emergency binder, a place to hold all of our account numbers, passwords and medical information.  My husband and I have talked about making something like this for years!  After looking at a few options, I think I’m going to purchase this printable kit and go from there.

On this week’s to-do list //
– make DIY oyster shells for the hens
– sand and stain the coffee table
– make s’mores dip
– deep clean the school room
– harvest peas
– package and deliver chicken orders
– finish hand quilting the grandmother’s flower garden quilt
– observe the Ember Days

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // Seedlings are emerging from the ground and the first fruits on the trees are growing!  I get so excited seeing what’s new when I walk the garden each morning.

As I look around the house // I’m feeling the pull to do some sort of summer decluttering challenge, maybe something similar to the 30 day challenge I did last fall?  I don’t feel like we have brought a ton of things into the house so far this year, but I can still see plenty that can go.

Focusing // on frugality in a big way this summer.  Like everybody else, inflation is kicking our bums and I can feel my stress starting to rise.  We have had such an expensive spring with the farm and I’m ready to just stop.spending.money, ha!  I foresee lots of homemade items being made, free local activities planned and the thermostat put up a notch or two.

On this week’s to-do list //
– get the last remaining seeds in the ground
– mail back standardized testing
– bake pretzel bites with sourdough discard
– make chicken broth for the freezer
– finish the Spiderman cross-stitch
– make final preparations for broiler processing
– start kombucha process

Considering // shaking up my reading by bringing back the “TBR Jar”.  This month, I really focused on my Reading the Alphabet Challenge, but it may be fun to do something different for summer.  We’ll see how I feel once I finish my current stack of books.  (P.S. I have a free printable on my ko-fi site so you can make your own jar too!)

The weather outside is //

As I look outside my window // I see the results of two days of constant rain – everything is soggy and there’s so much mud.  We actually had to move pigs into new paddocks on Saturday because they were at the far end of a slope (the worst possible paddock for this weather!) and the rain had flooded their house and made quicksand of the entire area.  You should have seen us slipping and sliding as we worked to move everything to drier land!  Definitely looking forward to some sunny days this week.

As I look around the house // I can tell that summer break is near because the list of house projects in my head starts growing!  So far, I’d like to do another round of decluttering, organize a few trouble areas, paint my back doors and finally finish the laundry room (the project that never ends…).

Thinking // deep thoughts as I’ve been spending hours upon hours outside these days. There is a propulsion to grow as much as possible, to buffer ourselves from the precarious financial situation our country finds itself in. At the same time, I’m driven by something more noble: I want to create something lovely and beautiful in this space!  Do I sound a little crazy?  I feel a little crazy.

Keeping // this quote from Wendell Berry front and center: “We have the world to live in on the condition that we will take good care of it.  And to take good care of it, we have to know it.  And to know it, and be willing to take care of it, we have to love it.”

On this week’s to-do list //
– finish up the last few remaining school subjects before testing next week (summer break is on the horizon!)
– design stickers for our chicken packaging and order
– clean and vacuum out the cars
– weed the front flower beds
– unsubscribe from a ton of marketing emails
– decide on reusable hankies (I’m thinking this set or this set?)
– decide on a new way to read my favorite blogs (Bloglovin’ has had problems off and on for months now…does anyone use/like Feedly?)

Smiling // about the daily question I get asked by my five-year-old: “What day is it?”  And when I respond, whether it’s a Monday or a Tuesday or a Saturday, he always answers, “Oh I love ____!”  From the mouths of babes…a good reminder that each day is a gift.
