No.814: Intentions for the Month of April

These types of posts are probably terribly boring for the average reader (sorry!) but so helpful for me to stay on track.  I printed off a copy of March’s post and taped it to my mirror, making sure to look at it at least once every day.  The process worked great and I’m excited to see if I can keep up the momentum in April.

A REVIEW OF LAST MONTH’S INTENTIONS
  • move Max and Ruby onto pasture (they are so happy to be out of the permanent paddock – I am too!)
  • add woodchips to the old permanent paddocks (we have more to do, but got a good enough start)
  • decide if we want to hire someone to woodchip some dead trees on the property (update: we do want to hire someone, but don’t have the money for it right now)
  • pull the bins holding chick supplies out of the shed and inventory (all good and we didn’t even need to replace any feeders or waterers!)
  • make a big feed order (60 bags and $1400 later…)
  • set up the baby chick area in the garage before their arrival
  • decide how many extra hens we’ll buy for 2024 (haven’t landed on a single amount, but we’re thinking 15-20)
  • muck the chicken coops and duck house (definitely procrastinated on this one…one of my least favorite farm chores)
  • amend the garden soil in one part of the garden
  • clean up the strawberry beds (I moved some runners into a new bed, so here’s hoping we get double the output this spring!)
  • go through the hand-me-down bins for a son who is suddenly growing like a weed! (found a few things!)
  • finish up my February junk journal
  • teach my daughter how to make homemade bread
  • get to confession
  • list a bunch of items on ebay/Poshmark/Pango (the Summer Vacation Farm Sitter Fund is off to a good start!)
  • wash and pack away all of the kids’ winter gear
  • finish ordering Easter basket gifts
  • decide what we’re wearing on Easter Sunday
  • simmer down on my caffeine consumption (tiny progress!  I’m down to 1.5 cups in the morning and a cup (or two) of decaf in the afternoon)
INTENTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL
  • schedule standardized testing for May
  • plan out the rest of the school year
  • wash and put away everyone’s flannel sheets and heavy blankets
  • start packing away the kids’ winter clothes
  • put broiler chickens out to pasture
  • buy hen chicks
  • add woodchips to the chicken/duck run
  • muck the chicken coops and duck house
  • amend the garden soil in one part of the garden
  • plant onion starts and seed potatoes
  • transplant the tomatoes and marigolds
  • fertilize all of the fruit trees and bushes
  • send Max and Ruby to the processor
  • move our breeder girls, Sally and Millie, onto pasture
  • see if we can find 3-4 new piglets
  • order chicken processing supplies (bags, stickers, zip ties, etc.)
  • keep listing on ebay/Poshmark/Pango and add to the Summer Vacation Farm Sitter Fund
  • start a spring cleaning checklist
  • declutter 15+ items in the kitchen (junk drawer, unneeded paperwork, etc.)

No.807: Intentions for the Month of March

Way back in the day (the first one was back in July 2017), I used to write intention lists as a way to keep me on track with my goals and the other everyday bits of life.  March is a huge month for us here on the farm as the growing season gets started.  I’m hoping this list will keep me organized and on track!  What tasks are on your list for March?

INTENTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH

  • make a big feed order
  • set up the baby chick area in the garage before their arrival
  • decide how many extra hens we’ll buy for 2024
  • muck the chicken coops and duck house

No.424: Intentions for the End of July

When I speak of home, I speak of the place where – in default of a better – those I love are gathered together; and if that place were a gypsy’s tent, or a barn, I should call it by the same good name notwithstanding.

No.408: Intentions for the Beginning of June

“Every analysis must necessarily start from the premise that—although each person lives in a particular concrete social and historical context—every human being is endowed with a dignity that must never be lessened, impaired or destroyed but must instead be respected and safeguarded, if peace is really to be built up.”

No.400: Intentions for the End of May

Today, the Lord said to me, “My daughter, I am told there is much simplicity in you, so why do you not tell Me about everything that concerns you, even the smallest details?  Tell Me about everything, and know that this will give Me great joy.”  I answered, “But You know about everything, Lord.”  And Jesus replied to me, “Yes, I do know; but you should not excuse yourself with the fact that I know, but with childlike simplicity talk to Me about everything, for My ears and heart are inclined towards you, and your words are dear to Me.”

        April 7, 2020

No.377: Intentions for the Beginning of April

A new month and and a fresh start.  I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed with all the tabs in my brain, so I made a “notepad” of sorts with these prompts:

        • “To Learn” is something that keeps my brain sharp: researching a DIY project, reading non-fiction, practicing a language on Duolingo
        • “To Do” is generally a homemaking task but could also be special one-on-one time with one of the kids
        • “To Move” is physical exercise, but it doesn’t have to fit the typical working out box.  Hauling huge bags of soil from the driveway to the garden is a huge work out!
        • “To Bake/Make” is self-explanatory – I like to mix up old favorites with new recipes I find on Pinterest
        • “To Serve” is a way for me to help my neighbor: keeping in touch with relatives, donating to good causes, thanking the people who are keeping us safe
        • “To Pray” is for special prayers I would like to make into habits, like the Angelus or the Divine Mercy Chaplet

Right now, I just print two to a page and cut them out, but I’d love to make it a real notepad some day.  I give myself two days for each list and limit myself to only one task per prompt.  And it’s working!  Most days I complete all six tasks, sometimes only three or four, but the point is that it keeps me intentional.  Yes, we are living in scary times, but I can still choose to live in hope and not despair.

INTENTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF APRIL

        • blog more (I think I need it for self-care!)
        • continue working on my new scrapbook project
        • add a fresh layer of soil to the front flower beds
        • plant wildflower seeds throughout the entire front beds
        • email the county to see if I still need to order standardized testing

          March 16, 2020

No.366: Intentions for the End of March

At the end of February, I was writing in all of our activities on the calendar for March and whining that our days are just too full: we rarely get to all sit down for dinner together and we hardly have an evening to just hang out at home.  Careful what you pray for!  After managing to keep ourselves healthy all winter, we all somehow caught Influenza A and it would not go away for a solid two weeks.  And now with coronavirus becoming a real problem, schools and church activities and extra-curriculars are all cancelled.  Suddenly, I’m staring at two weeks (or more!) of wide open days at home.  In a time of great uncertainty, I’m choosing to see this as a gift.

Also: because of that pesky flu, the first two weeks of March were a complete wash and I got none of my intentions list accomplished.  Hoping to play catch-up on those annnnd I added a bunch more because I can’t help myself.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF MARCH

          • have the kids involved in making dinner each night
          • get back to my 20th Century in Literature Challenge and read two books that fit
          • buy and lay down landscape fabric

            • continue a new routine of making bread daily

No.352: Intentions for the End of February

“Thought breeds thought; children familiar with great thoughts take as naturally to thinking for themselves as the well-nourished body takes to growing; and we must bear in mind that growth, physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, is the sole end of education.”
              ― Charlotte Mason

No.347: Intentions for the Beginning of February

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”
                ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity (p.205)
