No.188: Intentions for the End of October

“Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by
paying attention to what we already have.”
-unknown
I’m entering my 34th year at a limp.  I’m still in the thick of a post-weaning funk/depression, although it ebbs and flows.  It’s hard to talk about and I cannot wait for the clouds to lift for me.  I constantly remind myself that this is temporary, that my hormones will eventually stabilize, and that’s a small motivator to keep going.  Good thing I’m a fighter, haha.  I’d appreciate your prayers.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF OCTOBER

  • finish painting the headboards and add the topcoat
  • decide on a rug for the front hallway
  • send out Halloween packages
  • finish reading Estrogeneration
  • get the generator serviced (100LT #77)
  • call to have someone look at the dishwasher
  • increase Poshmark inventory to 85+
  • take out and work on my quilt using Memere’s fabric (100LT #13)
  • buy lightbulbs for the dining room chandelier
  • look into supplements (maybe magnesium?)
  • give myself lots of patience and grace as I continue to fight through this hormonal mess

    PREVIOUS INTENTIONS

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!
    • run (no training plan, just for fun) three times a week (I took two weeks off to see if it would help some health issues, but I’m looking forward to starting again soon)
    • paint the little boys’ headboards (started, but need to do the touch-ups and topcoat)
    • go on a birthday date (thank you Mom for babysitting!!)
    • buy gifts for D’s birthday
    • send two letters in the mail (just sent one)
    • try a new soup for “soup night” (I made tortellini soup with italian sausage and spinach)
    • decide on outfits for our family photos (I’m going with a red, cream and navy blue vibe this time)
    • figure out the front porch staining situation
    • call to have someone look at the dishwasher
    • buy new sneakers for M (we found a deal at Rack Room Shoes)
    • increase Poshmark inventory to 75+
    • finish reading Estrogeneration
    • read 100 pages in Don Quixote

What about you?  What do you hope to accomplish in the next two weeks?

No.180: Intentions for the End of September

I’m back from a much-needed internet break!  September is flying by and I’ve started to feel the beginning of burn out: our busy schedule, lots of new responsibilities, and staying up way too late were taking its toll.  I’ve been a frazzled, hot mess!  So last week, I turned off the horrible news stories, put my running plan on pause and tried to relax.  I wouldn’t say it fixed everything, but it’s a start.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF SEPTEMBER

No.175: Intentions for the Beginning of September

September is here and we have so much to look forward to: the start of co-op, multiple extra curricular activities, a 5K, and two birthdays.  As I turned the page in my calendar and started filling things in, I couldn’t help but remember the days when my monthly pages were practically blank.  When someone would ask when we were free, I’d laugh and say, “Pick a day, any day!”  Oh, how times have (quickly!) changed.  Take heart, mamas with a bunch of little ones who feel like your days stretch to eternity.  Full schedules will be in your future before you know it, hah!

INTENTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER

        • wrap birthday gifts for TJ and Sophie
        • attach glow-in-the-dark stars on the little boys’ room ceiling

          • schedule Sophie’s Kindergarten immunizations (she needed four and was SO brave!)

          • weed and mulch the front flower beds (on the to-do list for today)

          August 20, 2018

No.169: Intentions for the End of August

It seemed wrong not to post something in light of what’s happening in the Church right now, but articulate words have escaped me.  This Facebook post by Stephen Lenahan has made its way around my circles and while I don’t personally know him, he expressed much of what I’ve been feeling the past week:

To all my non-Catholic friends…please pray for your Catholic friends & family!
The most recent revelations of horrific abuse in our Church are gut wrenching. Right now, we don’t want to have to explain our faith or our religion because we ourselves are extremely vulnerable and raw. And most of us are asking the same questions you are when seeing headlines. Thousands have been physically violated. Some of us are friends with or related to victims. Millions of us have been spiritually violated by the scandal of it all. We are enraged at those who were supposed to shepherd us. We are devastated for the victims. And now we will have to try to root out the filth and rot that has been lurking in the shadows of our hierarchy since they failed in doing so 15 years ago.
You might ask…why don’t you just find a new church/home and be done with it? But it’s not that simple for us. Home is where the heart is and our hearts are devoted to the sacraments, scripture, and tradition we hold dear because they are where we encounter a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Right now our spiritual home and our hearts are broken. We know our Church to be one that endures the sins of the ages and triumphs for the sake of Christ in spite of the broken humanity that surrounds us. Right now we are trying to figure out how to be like the saints who faced evils in centuries past…but it is gut wrenching and this is why we need your support!
Thank God, like many of you, our hope is in Jesus Christ…not clerics…and so we know that better days are ahead but first we have to endure repentance, shame, anger, extreme reform, and hopefully justice! It will be a purge long overdue but it will leave our Church better than what we inherited. So please…pray for us, pray WITH us, and support us in this uphill battle.
To my Catholic family & friends…saddle up y’all! It’s time to take back our Church and it ain’t going to be easy. No more apathetic Catholics. No more lukewarm Catholics. No more “cafeteria Catholics.” Entrench yourself in prayer and scripture. And be bold in your parishes and dioceses!

“From the crisis of today the Church of tomorrow will emerge — a Church that has lost much. She will become small and will have to start afresh more or less from the beginning. She will no longer be able to inhabit many of the edifices she built in prosperity. As the number of her adherents diminishes, so it will lose many of her social privileges. In contrast to an earlier age, it will be seen much more as a voluntary society, entered only by free decision. As a small society, it will make much bigger demands on the initiative of her individual members…And so it seems certain to me that the Church is facing very hard times. The real crisis has scarcely begun. We will have to count on terrific upheavals. But I am equally certain about what will remain at the end: not the Church of the political cult, which is dead already, but the Church of faith. It may well no longer be the dominant social power to the extent that she was until recently; but it will enjoy a fresh blossoming and be seen as man’s home, where he will find life and hope beyond death.” – Ratzinger in 1969 German Radio Broadcast

No.163: Intentions for the Beginning of August

Two Sundays ago at Mass, my priest reflected on something his sister (a journalist for many years) mentioned to him while he was home on vacation.  She’s noticed that younger generations are good at protesting and telling politicians what changes need to be made, but many don’t roll up their sleeves and put in the work.  Obviously this is just one opinion and there are many exceptions to the contrary, but I’ve thought about that story and my own actions ever since.  Am I someone who adds to the noise without doing my part?

I don’t want to speak without action, but I also must be content in the vocation I’ve been given.  I may not be able to hop on a plane to serve across the United States or in foreign countries.  But maybe change doesn’t have to be so extravagant.  Change begins with relationship; it begins with grace and love and truth.  I may not solve the immigration crisis or end world hunger, but I can practice my Spanish in order to speak warmly to immigrant families in my community.  I can add a few extra items to my grocery cart to bring to the food bank.  Even tiny, little ripples can make a difference.

INTENTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST

            • buy the last supplies needed for school
            • write the first six weeks of lesson plans
            • order two lunchboxes for S and TJ (for co-op)

No.143: Intentions for the End of June

My big goal: WRITE EVERYDAY FOR A MONTH.  I’m more than halfway there!  This has been fun and intense and just a little bit crazy, but I’m not quitting yet.

Quick recap of my goals from the first half of June:

✔ my summer plans for the kids
✔ an “official” post about the African Geography Studies curriculum I created this year
✔ our favorite homemade granola recipe
✔ thoughts on a new book I’m reading
              ✔ 10 podcasts I’ve been listening to
✔ another round of bread recipes for Homesteading 101
✔ a project I’ve been quietly working on since January 1st
✔ some of my favorite things related to running

And a few more on the plan to write:
              • great recommendations I’ve recently saved from social media
              • another “official” post about the science curriculum we used for school this year
              • another round of things we’ve purchased for Farmhouse to Home
              • June’s Five Favorites linkup
              • a six-month update on my 2018 Goals and Projects list
              • June’s latest reads
If you have any post ideas, let me know.  Thanks for sticking around and reading!

              June 1, 2018

No.126: Intentions for the Beginning of June

There has been one task on my 100 Little Things list that’s been tempting me and June seems like the perfect time to pull the trigger:

              WRITE EVERYDAY FOR A MONTH!

I won’t have a specific theme like I did a few years ago, just a hodge-podge of the same sort of things I always write about: family, goals, food, books, and home.
In lieu of my usual intentions list, these are a handful of ideas that I hope to accomplish here this month:
              • my summer plans for the kids
              • an “official” post about the African Geography Studies curriculum I created this year
              • our favorite homemade granola recipe
              • thoughts on a new book I’m reading (I’m underlining almost every page!)
              • 10 podcasts I’ve been listening to
              • another round of bread recipes for Homesteading 101
              • a project I’ve been quietly working on since January 1st
              • some of my favorite things related to running

Writing everyday is a fun challenge for me, but I know 30 posts may be a lot for a reader.  I hope you’ll come along, but I totally understand if you skip out until July. 😊 Here we go!

              May 21, 2018

No.121: Intentions for the End of May

This sounds a little silly, but I’m doing something big today: I’m putting away the scale.  I know this is the epitome of first-world problems, but here’s my rationale: when I run, I feel invincible.  I feel strong and proud of myself.  But nothing kills that runner’s high faster than stepping on the scale and seeing…nothing.  No change (or even negative change!) after good choices and hard work.  This has been happening for a few weeks now and is making me reassess my health goals: am I running and eating better because it makes me feel alive or am I doing it all because I want to be thin?  Losing weight may come – or it may not – but I don’t want that to be the driving force anymore.  So the scale is going into storage for now.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF MAY

              • put away the scale – maybe only one check-in on the first of every month?
              • start incorporating more stretching on off days, especially for my hip muscles
              • tidy up the school room for summer and take inventory of supplies needed
              • make a plan for screen use during the summer and stick to it
              • get my car to the mechanic for an inspection
              • renew library cards
              • buy a new push broom
              • practice what I preach to the kids and floss every.single.night (not randomly, like I usually do)
              • paint my toes
              • make energy bites
              • buy an ice cream maker (100LT #52)
              • string lights throughout the back porch
              • borrow a power washer and start prepping the front porch for staining
              • scrub bird poop off the porch (the con to having baby birds)
              • plan a day with my mom
              • give all of the boys haircuts

              PREVIOUS INTENTIONS

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!
              • WATER – drink lots and lots of it (I need to be better about this)
              • add a consistent strength training day to my weekly exercise load (not my favorite day of the week, but necessary to stay injury-free)
              • find two new podcasts to listen to while running (listened to a few episodes of Another Mother Runner and The Lazy Genius)
              • mail in the kids’ finished standardized testing
              • make a list of the remaining assignments/readings for the last few weeks of school
              • plan a day with my mom
              • buy a succulent (100LT #48) and some herbs for the kitchen window
              • look into getting an ice cream maker
              • renew library cards
              • finish reading Dorothy Day’s biography (still plugging away on this one – almost done!)
              • read two books sitting on my nightstand (I read Make Your Bed and The Art Detective )
              • decide on new summer sandals, one casual pair and one for church (still undecided – I think I want Birks for the casual ones, but haven’t found a dressier pair I like yet)
              • buy sandals for P (I found an old pair from his big brothers for him to wear – adorable!)
              • make oobleck with Sophie (100LT #93)
              • buy tiny hooks
              • string lights throughout the back porch
              • borrow a power washer and start prepping the front porch for staining (all the rain postponed this, but I need to get it done soon)

What about you?  What do you hope to accomplish in the next two weeks?

              May 7, 2018

No.117: Intentions for the Beginning of May

After months and months of cold weather and brown everything, it seems like it’s all coming alive overnight!  Our grass is green, the trees are blooming and animals are everywhere!  The nest we’ve been watching on our front porch fan is now filled with five itty-bitty baby birds.  Like any season, there are pros and cons to spring (major cons = seasonal allergies, cars caked in yellow pollen and ant invasions by the side door), but I definitely have a new appreciation this year.  He makes all things new.

INTENTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF MAY

              • WATER – drink lots and lots of it
              • add a consistent strength training day to my weekly exercise load
              • find two new podcasts to listen to while running
              • mail in the kids’ finished standardized testing

              PREVIOUS INTENTIONS

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!
              • start running at least three times a week (so happy about this!  I’m only averaging about 2-3 miles at a time and at a snail’s pace, but I love it anyway)
              • try making bulletproof coffee (it was okay, but I thought it tasted way too much like liquid butter than coffee)
              • choose a baby gift for my cousin’s shower
              • buy a baptism gift for a friend (I got one of these adorable mini rosaries)
              • buy tiny hooks
              • string lights throughout the back porch

              • make dentist appointments
              • print photographs off of old hard drive
              • finally finish December Daily 2017 album
              • finish another book that I’ve only partially finished (didn’t finish, but made a lot of progress in my Jackson Pollock book)
              • pick a date for a field trip (the kids went with Mark to “Take Your Child to Work Day” – a trip to Jamestown is coming soon!)
              • recommit to weaning P – make a plan and stay strong! (decided to “officially” start in May – he is SO stubborn, so this is going to be tricky)
              • start dreaming and sketching our garden for next year

What about you?  What do you hope to accomplish in the next two weeks?

No.108: Intentions for the End of April

I took an unintentional, but much needed internet break last week.  It was a week full of family and weekday sleepovers and play dates – so many good things!  Because of all the extras, I had to scrap my never ending to-do list and stick to the essentials.  Sometimes life forces my hand a bit, telling me sternly, “Lady, you need to check yourself.  You can’t do it all and that’s okay.”  I’m always grateful for that reminder to slow down.  Especially when I refuse to do it on my own.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF APRIL

              • Habit of the Month: Thoroughness
              • start running at least three times a week – movement is the goal, not paces or miles
              • try making bulletproof coffee
              • choose a baby gift for my cousin’s shower
              • buy a baptism gift for a friend
              • buy tiny hooks
              • string lights throughout the back porch (100LT #61)
              • do a science experiment with Sophie
              • make dentist appointments
              • print photographs off of old hard drive
              • finally finish December Daily 2017 album

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!
              • switch car seats around (5 out of 6 were happy about the change, so pretty good odds, hah)
              • take out clothes to spring/summer and pack away winter (half done!)
              • fix the dryer hose
              • start a deep cleaning of the house (I’m using this checklist – thank you for sharing, Jessica!)
              • finalize plans for front walkway and flower beds (the estimate was waaay more than we had budgeted, so we’ve decided to just do the flower beds for now)
              • string lights throughout the back porch (we need to pick up tiny hooks first)
              • install curtain rods and hang curtains in the dining room
              • make dentist appointments (need to sync with Mark’s schedule)
              • print photographs off of old hard drive for my December Daily album

                • return to a few half-finished books and finish them (finished In This House of Brede, but then started and finished two new ones…oops!)
                • research safe sunscreens that actually work (trying Bare Republic – thanks for the recommendation, Catherine!)
                • bake a loaf of whole wheat bread
                • make a batch of granola
                • learn how to make baguettes

No.103: Intentions for the Beginning of April

It’s Spring Break for us this week!  Our days are purposefully wide open and while the weather doesn’t look promising, I hope we’ll be able to spend much of it outdoors.  I also plan to attack my long overdue to-do list and maybe even deep clean my house.  And reading.  Definitely lots of reading too!

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!

                  • send out the first batch of cards for the Springtime Postcard Project (still room to sign up!)

                  • buy candy and fill eggs
                  • make sure the kids have something appropriate to wear for Easter (and me too!)
                  • find a type of sushi that I like (anything cooked is good – I still can’t get behind raw fish yet)
                  • drink more water
                  • make dentist appointments
                  • plan out flower beds for the front of the house and research local landscape architects (we had a landscape architect consultation last week, so excited!)
                  • find coordinating outdoor pillows for the front rocking chairs and back bench that don’t cost a small fortune (no luck yet!)
                  • start the weaning process with P (this isn’t going very well…he’s teething and sick and not really having it)
