No.91: Intentions for the Beginning of March

Hello from the other side!  I’m embarrassed to admit that we were those people, totally unprepared for the wind storm that pummeled us on Friday.  Thank goodness for random bits of food in the pantry and generous neighbors who shared their bottled water with us!  A huge tree down the street fell and pulled a power line down with it, blocking our only exit.  On our property, we had a smaller tree snap in half and a big one is currently leaning precariously on another.  We lost power for a total of 56 hours, but were able to escape to my parents for most of it.  (Such a big thanks to them as well!)  We felt like we learned so many lessons: procrastination will eventually come back to bite you (ironically, we were going to buy some emergency gear this month!), we’re WAY more attached to technology than we think, and God is good all the time.  Even when we’re huddled in three blankets, teeth chattering, eating the crumbs from the cereal box. 🙂

INTENTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF MARCH

    • Habit of the Month: Gentleness
    • on stressful days, stop and breathe before responding
    • be intentional about having some sort of physical contact with each child daily (cuddles or even just a side hug – different strokes for different temperaments around here, hah!)
    • start buying items for a house emergency kit
    • try overnight oatmeal
    • research intermittent fasting
    • start taking my vitamins regularly again
    • make dentist appointments
    • finish Easter basket shopping
    • plan a day with my mom
    • buy stamps
    • try ThredUp’s new Goodybox program (like Stitch Fix, but secondhand!)

      PREVIOUS INTENTIONS

If you’re reading on your phone or in a reader, be sure to click over to see what I checked off the list!
      • for Lent: workouts first thing every morning before touching my phone or computer (it hasn’t exactly played out this way, but I AM working out AND I’m doing my devotional, so hopefully still leading me to Christ)
      • fill up on more green veggies
      • try overnight oatmeal
      • try kombucha (100LT #58) (we tried this one and this one…an acquired taste, but not as bad as I thought!)
      • find one last item for February’s Five Favorites prize pack (I found soap from Honest Roots Farm here in Virginia)
      • finalize plans for Term Three of the school year (blog post coming soon)
      • start brainstorming Easter baskets (I’m weaning myself from my Amazon Prime habit and trying to shop small or local, so starting early!)
      • make speech appointment
      • make dentist appointments
      • make eye appointments for the big boys
      • unpack and display my newly inherited china from my grandmother (I need to make the time to do this!)

      • learn how to make baguettes (100LT #50)

      • bring donations to Goodwill

What about you?  What do you hope to accomplish in the next two weeks?

No.85: Intentions for the End of February

I had completely lost track of my days, so when Mark came home from work on Friday and announced that it was a three-day weekend, I cheered along with the kids!  We had snow falling most of Saturday and the kids were able to play in it Sunday morning before it all melted.  Lots of bread and pretzel rolls and brownies were made.  Lots of reading was done.  Lots of laughter (and only a little bickering) was heard.  Lots of potty-training was accomplished (finally – praise Jesus!!).  If you need me, I’ll be soaking up one more lazy day before reality begins again.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF FEBRUARY

      • Habit of the Month: Patience
      • for Lent: workouts first thing every morning before touching my phone or computer

        • catch up on blog reading and leave thoughtful comments (I’m so behind – need to make the time this week)
        • wash my used to be white Nike Frees (they still aren’t totally white, that darn Virginia clay!  Maybe I should invest in a special stain stick?)
        • make more big salads for lunch (I did this about three times…)

No.67: Intentions for the Beginning of January

What is it about twinkle lights?  So calming and almost magical.  The tree and most of the Christmas decorations have been packed away for next year, but the twinkle lights in the kitchen and dining room are staying put for now.  Very hygge, don’t you think?

        December 4, 2017

        No.55: Intentions for December

It’s beginning to look a little like Christmas around here!  We’re trying something new this year for Advent: today (on the first Sunday) we brought out the tree, but left it bare.  Then, the next two weeks, we’ll slowly start adding ornaments and garland, a little bit day by day.  On the fourth Sunday (and Christmas eve!), we’ll put the presents underneath.  Advent is all about preparation and anticipation and I think this will be a fun way to practice both.

        INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER:

        • Habit of the Month: Thanksgiving
        • stick with the Rooted in Hope journal (make a new morning habit!)
        • try to take a decent picture of the kids for Christmas cards
        • buy P’s needlepoint stocking

        • slow down, unplug and enjoy this last month of the year

        PREVIOUS INTENTIONS:

        • wrap picture books for Advent
        • start the Rooted in Hope journal
        • print out the kids sheets for Rooted in Hope (I decided to save paper and ink and just discuss the questions verbally with the kids)
        • try to take a decent picture of the kids for Christmas cards (no luck yet! I need to get on it)
        • decide on a gift for P’s first birthday (Much to the excitement of his brothers, we got him this.  He’ll be zipping around the house with TJ in no time)
        • buy P’s needlepoint stocking
        • get organized for December Daily (sort-of??  I have a feeling I’ll just be winging it)
        • slow down, unplug and enjoy Thanksgiving with family (our week in Maine was wonderful)

No.52: Intentions for the End of November

2017 has been a whirlwind – how are we at the end of the year already?!  I’ve been thinking a lot about my one little word and how it manifested itself throughout the year.  “Slow” is simultaneously such a simple and yet intensely difficult thing to achieve.  As a family, we made intentional changes to grasp it and yet I still have so many days that are an absolute blur.  I sometimes wonder, with my big family and crazy life, if it’s even smart to strive for the goal of slow living.  But the more I think about it, the more I know it is.  It may be moment to moment, but “slow” is the word that directs my actions.  I pull back, reassess and see life with the lens of gratitude.  Slow is a word that I’ll take with me for years to come.

INTENTIONS FOR THE END OF NOVEMBER:

No.49: Intentions for the Beginning of November

A new month, a new habit!  I’m reflecting on this quote from Melody Beattie this month: “Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

No.41: Intentions for the End of October

After eight straight weeks of school, I declared to the kids that today was a Teacher In-service Day, or more accurately, “Mama needs a little break to get her life in order”.  Our days have felt SO full lately, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I know myself.  If I don’t take some intentional time to slow down and catch up on laundry, bills, lesson plans, and a few much over-due projects (or even just half of that list!), I’ll start spiraling into anxiety.  And ain’t nobody got time for that, hah.

No.37: Intentions for the Beginning of October

We finally had a slow weekend at home and I was able to knock off a few overdue to-dos from my list – my curtains and bedroom art finally went up!  As I was puttering around my room, organizing and straightening, I had a “duh!” moment: I have so much peace when the house isn’t cluttered.  The rest of the household doesn’t seem to be as affected by “stuff” as I am, but I think it’s a discipline still worth exploring.  And bonus, there’s a habit for that!  So October’s habit is orderliness – picking up after ourselves, keeping our living areas clean and neat, and putting things back where they belong.  I’m hopeful for a fruitful month.
