No.129: One Fun Thing a Day 2018

This post contains affiliate links.

Three years ago, we started a new summer tradition called One Fun Thing a Day.  Some years have been more successful than others, but in general, it’s been a nice low-key way to make memories as a family.  This is the first summer where I can feel a shift: my two oldest boys aren’t quite as excited about blowing bubbles as they were in years past, hah!  So bittersweet.  Still, we’ll forge on and give the little ones the same fun experience the big ones had.

New Books for Summer Adventures:
+ Williams-Sonoma The Kid’s Cookbook & The Usborne Beginner’s Cookbook (both found at the thrift store)
+ The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science: 64 Daring Experiments for Young Scientists (for the big boys)
+ Look I’m a Scientist (for Sophie and TJ)

My Working List of Ideas:
  • water beads
  • sumo wrestling with Dad’s old t-shirts
  • explore a new playground
  • chocolate covered strawberries
  • outdoor scavenger hunt
  • make “super bubbles”
  • have a picnic lunch

No.128: 10 Podcasts I’m Listening To Right Now

I’m so late to the podcast party, but it’s hard to listen with my constant companions and their million interruptions.  But!  I’ve finally found the answer: running!  Those 30-45 minutes by myself seem to be the perfect amount of time to listen to an episode or two.  I have been listening to all.the.things and they’re super diverse on purpose: I want to immerse myself in lots of viewpoints and ideas.  You know me, I’m always learning.  Here are ten podcasts I’ve tried so far:

1 // ELISE GETS CRAFTY
small business knowledge & thoughts on goal-setting, motivation and creativity

Episode listened to: on finding more in less / ep 141

2 // SORTA AWESOME
In the drudgery of daily life, it’s easy to forget that all around us (and within us!), awesome things are happening. Each week, author and show host Megan Tietz and co-hosts Kelly, Rebekah, and Laura serve up fresh doses of sparkly small things and provide thoughtful answers to listener questions all with an eye on helping you make your inner awesome shine.

Episode listened to: Extra Awesome: Laura Tremaine has 10 Things To Tell You

3 // ANOTHER MOTHER RUNNER
This weekly podcast explores the intersection of running and mothering.  Host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of a dozen marathons, is joined by a rotating coterie of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to the value of a best running friend, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: These mother runners cover it all (and then some).

Episode listened to: Boston Marathon 2018

4 // THE LAZY GENIUS
Being a person is hard, and The Lazy Genius Podcast is here to help you be a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t. From laundry to cooking chicken to making new friends, Kendra is here to welcome you into an easier way.

8 // THE SIMPLE SHOW
Some things feel complex—let’s make them easier to understand. Tsh Oxenreider chats with friends as they break down big ideas. From deep stuff, like world events, to smaller things, like Netflix binges, they deep-dive to make sense of it all, then come back up for air more enlightened. With co-hosts Kendra Adachi, Stephanie Langford, Erin Loechner, and Haley Stewart.

Episode listened to: Social Self-Care

9 // IN THE DARK
Reporter Madeleine Baran examines the case of Curtis Flowers, who has been tried six times for the same crime. For 21 years, Flowers has maintained his innocence. No.126: Intentions for the Beginning of June

There has been one task on my 100 Little Things list that’s been tempting me and June seems like the perfect time to pull the trigger:

WRITE EVERYDAY FOR A MONTH!

I won’t have a specific theme like I did a few years ago, just a hodge-podge of the same sort of things I always write about: family, goals, food, books, and home.
In lieu of my usual intentions list, these are a handful of ideas that I hope to accomplish here this month:
  • my summer plans for the kids
  • an “official” post about the African Geography Studies curriculum I created this year
  • our favorite homemade granola recipe
  • thoughts on a new book I’m reading (I’m underlining almost every page!)
  • 10 podcasts I’ve been listening to
  • another round of bread recipes for Homesteading 101
  • a project I’ve been quietly working on since January 1st
  • some of my favorite things related to running

Writing everyday is a fun challenge for me, but I know 30 posts may be a lot for a reader.  I hope you’ll come along, but I totally understand if you skip out until July. 😊 Here we go!
